Do some searching, there's an overwhelming amount of information.

That said, it depends on a bunch of factors:

Age of engine (miles/hours)
Type of engine and use
Climate
Available funds for oil
etc.
etc.

Examples:

My $500 Truck gets whatever I can find laying around, same with our $1500 airport Jeep
Airplane gets 15-50 Aeroshell
Bug and 914-6 both with hydro lifters get the Castro 5-40 Euro as it seems to work best with the lifters.

Seems like if you can keep oil between the little lines on the dipstick, you've done 90% of your job.
