What other engines besides the ones that originally came with the car, have been put into the 914, or what are other candidates for engines?

The sky (and your budget) is the limit. There are a few facebook groups dedicated to 914 engine swaps and outlaw conversions. The coolest one I've seen is a Ferrari V8. If it were me, I'd go for a Honda K24 with a Boxter 6sp.
