QUOTE(Marv's3.6six @ Aug 30 2022, 10:15 AM) *

Thanks for all the comments and concerns.

I have just learned from Hagerty that I cannot accept a settlement from them and then go after the shop for any difference from insured value and market value. This is most likely because Hagerty will be going after the shop to recover their loss.

I had decided I wanted to make the car perfect, it was at Autowerkes to address a leaky transmission. I also had plans for some new minor mods in process, it is much easier to love your baby when she is perfect and not constantly marking the floor.

Yes I had talked about selling earlier this year and talked to Bringatrailer, they loved the car BUT the leaky trans is an issue. She was not far off from being a super high dollar seller at BAT, sad.

I am so sorry to hear of this. Your car is immaculate.

I had Haggerty's at one time. What were the terms of the policy...agreed value?

Very sorry to hear about this. Everything put into a project like this only to have it taken from you.

I hope you get your 914 back.

Man what a bummer. I'm not an expert in this stuff but I'd still talk to a lawyer if it was me. Hagerty may say that but it doesn't mean its right and the only option.

Good luck!

I'm trying to imagine what a thief is going to do with it? Sell for parts? Even that would be tough to do IMO. Have you posted engine serial numbers/etc?

-Steve

Steve, my thoughts are the same regarding a lawyer but it is still early days. I picture in my mind that my car is loaded on some container and headed who knows where.

mmmmm
its bizarre to steal a car of that age and so specialised.
and to target it specifically.
they definitely must have cased the shop and been very fluid and mobile in their ability to identify and target as your car had only just gone in there?

they didn't steal any other car?

that kind of stuff was going on in aus but not cars of such vintage and specialization.
african/arab immigrant gangs were going after late model luxury vehicles.
they were in containers and on ships almost before the owners woke up in the morning.
(ps not being racist, just that the activities here were meshed into recent waves of immigration with links back to country of origin and the activity was different to the usual century old activities with dubious wrecking yards and parting out).

if thats the case then stealing to order has moved into another league?

I posted up on IG on my account about theft (gmanscott55) and received this response just now from a friend whose buddy saw it on fwy yesterday. This is his IG account.

Note: Ignore 1st item in post as it was unrelated.

Marv, hope this helps and perhaps it is still in SCal area.

Thanks to Gary I have spoken to the guy that spotted the car. It is confirmed it is my car for sure.

BOLO Spotted Monday 29 August early evening on the 105 fwy headed for the 60 east. Driver appears to be 30ish, brown hair, short beard, light skinned.

Some LE agencies are better than others when it comes to auto theft. Might be worth seeing if the CHP can tap into their Cal Trans camera system. Maybe they can do a bit of searching and figure out what offramp.

I swear, with all the cameras these days, following an item like this should be doable. Exits freeway. Camera feeds in either direction pick it up going X direction.. give a general neighborhood maybe.

Local cops probably know the players in any given neighborhood, chop shops etc.

Just a thought.

Also, same with the news outlets. KTLA always tapping into Cal Trans Cameras, maybe one of the "car guys" who reports on car things (Gayle Anderson?) would be interested in the story of the classic porsche last seen on video... you never know how getting the word out could help on this. And what a story it would be.

My .02 cents, very sorry for your loss.

Somebody needs to walk the area to see if there are any cameras that could have possibly caught something.

I grew up 2 blocks from this shop, been down that street hundreds of times. Given the number of business including a storage facility I would be surprised if there are not cameras close by.

Wow, that takes some balls to be out driving something that identifiable around. I was thinking someone probably boosted it to harvest the motor. Maybe this is a good sign it will be recovered in one piece.

First, Sorry for your loss....I can't even imagine having a 914 of this caliber. Second, I hate to belabor the camera point that has already been made, but have you asked the shop to show you their camera footage? (I'm sure you have, but I'd be interested in their answer.) Do they have cameras? I would think for liability reasons they would have cameras in their shop, sales area, and outside.

8 Camera systems with the switch and cabling are easily under 1K.
It would be hard to imagine a company that fixes high dollar European Cars in Southern California would not have at least a simple camera system.

Also, as mentioned by others, as long as the car wasn't immediately pushed up into a box truck and hauled off, it would be visible by every camera on those streets/adjacent streets for miles. Good luck with this.

So sorry for your loss man. This is brutal. My dad's brand new CRV (his first ever new car that he's owned and it was a gift from me - leased) I dropped off on his driveway at 6pm and it was gone by 3am. Someone stole it. Got it back from a shipping container 2 months later with damage. Repaired the damage. He drove it for a year and no kidding, on the anniversary date of the initial theft, same thing happened. And this time, it never came back.

I have started putting Apple air tags in all my cars. I hide them and make a note where I hid them because you have to change the batteries annually. Might be something to consider for everyone.

But man, I am gutted for you. Bunch of a-holes.

I agree with @Craigers17 . I had a 2001 NSX I bought that was still at the dealership and one of their employees, an NSX certified technician no less, broke into the manager's office, took the keys from the locked desk and stole my car. All on dealership video, clear as day. It all worked out for me, but the employee lost his job. I refused to press charges and the dealer made me happy.

I had met the employee and he had volunteered to deliver my car (it was in New Jersey) for free. I told him I was having it transported but thanked him for his kind offer. He wanted to take his girlfriend out to dinner in the car to impress her ands then he took it home and parked it in his garage, where the dealership found it in the morning.

I hope this 914-6 shows up soon and in one piece.

Hey guys thanks for all the love.

Update I spoke this morning with Bruce Powers owner of Autowerkes, he is gutted over this. They have never had a car stolen from them before so this is new territory. Bruce was able to find the footage of the crime, images are not clear BUT he is reaching out to all his neighbors on the street for them to review their security footage.

Here is what we know: at approx 1am Sunday morning someone broke into the yard by breaking the lock on their rolling gate and opening it. Perp can be seen moving 2 other cars to get to mine, only my car was stolen. They were able to get my car started and turn on the lights, however I don't have the headlight motors (have GT gas strut kit) so you can see on the security footage that the headlights are on but lights are not popped up, they then drove out of frame. Here is the odd bit it appears that the perp came back Sunday evening at about 9:45pm to roll the gate closed. Weird.

we got so many speed/toll/red light cameras down here that the cops can track anything - and do.
a mate of mine's son had his ute stolen. it was nicked around 2.00 AM.
by lunchtime that day the cops could tell him a highly detailed track of where it was driven and had narrowed down the suburb they believed it was in.
sadly it was found the next day dumped and stripped. in the next suburb it was tracked to via cameras. all the cameras have license plate recognition.
unfortunately the thieves work very quickly down here. just one step in front.

all the surveillance stuff down here is good in that respect.
also a bit of a worry from a civil liberties point of view.
but....

its good you have a description of this guy.
he must be either stupid or supremely arrogant.
be only a matter of time.

Has an artist rendering been done of the prep ? Someone knows …,,,or may be known by law enforcement already.
And, this part about closing the gate may be a valuable clue of some sort.

I sure hope the car gets returned.

I just spoke with James Patrick of Patrick Motorports to BOLO. James' parts are all over that car, he knows the car. I hope it does not come to this but James said $225k to build a new one, ouch. Thats a delta of 2.3x from the Hagerty insured value. Again I hope it gets returned and don't want to get all legal if'n you know what I mean.
