It is an alternate location to mount the spare tire.
Thats where the GT cars had them. |

The aftermarket cover, typically covers the hole so you don’t see it. My 72 and 75 both have the hole. If you’re running a radiator in the front for subi and SBC conversions, then that’s the only spot to mount a spare tire.

74 1.8 trunk carpet. 75/76 = same.
soft version of cushion underneath has the hole formed as a heat impress. in original condition you have to cut/punch through for bolt as its not pressed out.   |
