My starting point for 914 knowledge really began when I bought my first one. That is the beginning and is the basis for everything I know. Lots of what I know is wrong. My cooling flap return spring has been broken for years and I did not know it. Until I saw how one was supposed to look at a salvage yard yesterday. I forgot to try and take it off.

Does anyone sell just the return spring or is it only as part of the whole flap assembly? I was thinking you could carefully unwind the spring around the rod to get it off or on. Reality might have other opinions of that.

I searched here and a little online but did not find anything.

One end is hooked over the tab on the fan shroud right next to where the cable is fastened to the cross-shaft. The other end is hooked over the tab on the cross-shaft that the cable is captured by.

EDIT: Here's a pic of the flaps and cross-shaft from another thread:

Haven't made the spring yet, but have the boshings, and the U shaped piece hat actuates the flap at the oil cooler.

It seems like that spring would be a challenge to get on. I've never seen a set of flaps that needed one. Seems like buying the whole flap with it on there used is the way to go. Here's some:

I agree, was just seeing if the spring option had been done before. The hook broke off on mine and it is a real challenge to get it located to work.
