I'm opening it up for the first time in many decades. I got my '76 in 1984 as the 2nd owner. I'm pretty sure the seat fabric wasn't changed from original before I got it, but looking at the fabric patterns and colors I can find here and elsewhere, nothing looks like the pattern I have. The color has faded and of course wear, but did they go hog wild in the last few production models and used anything? my vin is 4762903481, 12/75. It's Malaga red.

wasn't really anything goes in 75/76.
karmann were using the tartan fabrics which had been developed for the VW sirrocco range. the sirrocco was under production at karmann alongside the 914.
so they used those fabrics as well.
the sirrocco effectively replaced the 914 as far as VW was concerned.

i don't believe the 911s used the tartan fabrics.
not a porsche thing.

agree with @rjames whatever that fabric is its not VW fabric from 75/76.

Interesting... So Sciroccos were being made in parallel with 914s. I guess you learn something everyday.

The 75 and 76 had interior tartan options that synched with the exterior colors. My silver 75 came.with the black/grey option for example
Here are the options and what.i believe would come stock for your car.

I will also note that the tartans were notoriously short-lived in terms.of durability even to the point of the dealers replacing them on the lot due to fading. It is not unreasonable to assume they wore out fast and the other owner didnt want to spring for the expensive replacement and rather grabbed some other like material.

That's what I was thinking I'd do, but I was curious why my pattern didn't match. After hearing they could fade/wear pretty quick I guess that does make more sense.

Thanks for all the replies!

When you take the bottom cushion out to you see any evidence of the previous cover? I had an odd fabric covering my seats and discovered that my car came with tartan that way...

That is a re-cover I had a similar blue/grey cloth in a pattern install like yours, but it was not stock. I got the car about 10 years after original sale so I am not sure if they did that at the dealer or someone else did it after purchase.

sirroccos took over the aisle in final assembly hall where 914s were done.
and 914s were shifted over to where karmann ghias were done.
alongside VW cabriolets just as the ghias had been built next to VW cabs.

karmann ghias ended in 74.

they built way more sirroccos and at way greater volumes than they ever did 914s.
much bigger hit with the car buying public at that time.
not that the 914 was necessarily a slouch in karmann ghia terms or porsche terms when it came to numbers sold.

but the sirrocco was VW's idea of respectable production numbers and units out the door in the showroom.
