Other than drain the transmission, add magnetic drain plug, flush, and refill we didn't open it but there is a slight leak coming from the side shifter linkage.

Is the cover intended to catch this leak or is something not right?

there is an o-ring on the cover/housing...
you can pull it and replace or not worry too much..
either way.

brant is referring to the o-ring for the housing but there is also a seal in that assembly that seals to the shift rod that is sliding in/out of the housing and as it pivots fore/aft.

Based on where your leak is, I think it’s that internal seal. I know there are other threads on this - probably with seal info for replacement.

There is an o-ring on the body to tranny
There is a shaft seal right under that arm you can see.

There is a thread I just posted detailing this with pics.
It’s on the first two or three pages.

Agreed, I would bet the leak is from the seal and not the O ring. Plastic cover is meant to keep water/dirt from the linkage area.

Plan replacing the ball cup bushing while you’re in there. Take the time to do the rest of the bushings too. You will need 2 new set screws. Typically a one time use item. Use the old ones setting the linkage up and swap them at the end. Mark/index all connection points with a fine tip sharpie.

I could not find them seperatly.

Cup bushings, get two (one for that area, one for the shifter.

Console bushing, in my opinion, is far too loose in stock form.
The shifter rod moves too much at that key point.

Go to gpr.com and buy the bronze bushing….it’s nice and snug.
Seems he is the only one who sells it.

Check the other thread I just posted fir some pics about this.

The cover has a small hole in the bottom side that serves as a drain…I think.

The side shift tran shifter does not use a cup bushing. That is on the tail shift shifter.

Rich Dauenhauer (914werke) is who has the bronze console bushing. GPR.com is a website for ground positioning radar. I dont know if the old German parts and Restoration is still around.

Edit. I found German Parts and Restoration and they charge $23.50 for the bushing whilt Rich charges $9.14.
