I was able to purchase a VW Bus Axle. 914 axles are 20.25 in length and about 25mm in diameter. This bus axle is 20.50 in length and 28mm in diameter (double check the length on what you are buying). Best I can measure the CV's are in the same place with just 3mm on each end difference. The 914 axles I have look like they were ground off to make them shorter from the factory There is plenty of room in the 944 Turbo stub axle and the 915 transmission flange for movement. The axles are fully loaded and ready to go. Depending on where you shop you can pick up a pair shipped for less than $185. The only modification I see will be adding extra gasket on the transmission flange. To make these work you will need 944 stub axles and 915 transmission flanges.

The old original bus cv's had 17 degrees on angle. The new 944/bus cv's go a full 24 degrees. Stock 914 cv angle was 12 degrees. Will play around this weekend and see what comes up.

Opinions?

Years ago, I‘ve tried the same, but was never able to locate a set of these 20 1/2 inch vanagon axles.
They were always way longer than 20 1/2 ….

Just for reference:

I‘ve ended up using modified 914 axles with 100mm CVs on 944 turbo stubs.

I have just looked in my records. You need to get axles for vanagons (1983 onwards) with automatic transmission, but only the left side will fit, which is 522mm long. Right side is 570mm
