..of a trans housing leak as a result of a prior welding repair made years ago. The repair of a punched hole was apparently made with aluminum weld material, and has developed a leak at the welded patch. My mechanic's welder is having trouble finding magnesium welding rods to properly make the repair now, can any of you suggest a source for these mag rods? This info is way above my pay grade when it comes to welding! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hissyfit.gif)

I get mine from Grainger, stores are everywhere. Not the cheapest but always available.
Pretty easy metal to weld. Does need an argon blanket on the back side of the weld. ..of a trans housing leak as a result of a prior welding repair made years ago. Can’t help with welding rods but I do have a spare case if you can’t get it repaired. Just one state over in Tennessee.

Magnesium filler rod comes in many different alloys. 99% of the welders out there have zero idea on how to weld it correctly so I caution you. Quality magnesium filler rod is upwards of $400 a lbs

Or, Buy a good used case. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) There are lots out there, and its way more reliable in the long run. I know Zims has a bunch of transmissions cheap. Contact Aaron ( @partsguy22 ) for a good used transmission. If the guts of yours is good, have Dr Evil transfer it into the new case. |

If a leak is the only issue, I would consider sealing it with a good grade of silicone. Speaking from experience

I had a Triumph TR4 back in the 80's. The aluminum thermostat housing developed a crack and was leaking. ground out the crack and filled it with JB Weld epoxy. Never leaked and that is under 12lbs. of pressure and heat!
