Replacing 76 2.0 HE's with earlier models, What is involved? Options

Can you guys tell me what all is involved with replacing the restrictive CA heat exchangers on a 76 2.0 with a set of the free-flowing HE's off of a 73 2.0?

As I understand it there are some issues with the heat valves that need to be addressed?

Can you clue me in?

Its a bolt-on swap but here's a quick list of things you will need...

Muffler
Exhaust hanger
Heat Exchangers
Heat shield/guides under the engine
J-Tubes going up through the engine tin
S tubes underneath
Elbows going to heater valves

You are in the south so you may not use heat. If so, all you need is the exchangers, muffler, hanger and gaskets.

Its a very simple change!

if your heat exchangers are in good shape, keep them and do not replace with the early system you will gain virtually nothing, however you can remove the cat if it is a california car.

Converting means adding a lot of expensive plumbing besides the expensive heat exchangers and muffler and muffler bracket

I purchased this car off of BAT last May that was in storage in CA for years. I had it delivered to a so-called '914 specialist' in my area to get it road worthy and it sat at his shop for 6 months, with nothing done. I finally ended up having to retrieve the car and take it to another shop where the work has been outstanding.

The new shop almost has it ready, replacing all the underside rubber, fuel lines, a complete tune-up, master cylinder, brake lines, new tires, etc., etc..

All the CA smog crap was removed, the exhaust system and single-tube HE's removed, and '73 HE's installed, along with a new stock muffler. The only thing left to do is connect the HE's. Apparently there was more to it than I was aware of. My budget on this project is running low right now!

Someone asked about needing heat here in the South. Yes, it gets cold here too and I would like to be able to use the car year around. But no, I won't need the heat until next fall. That's why I'm trying to get all the parts rounded up now and have them ready for the install later in the summer (after my wallet recovers! Ouch!) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

Too late George! I wish I had known beforehand! But I probably would have change it anyway at a later date. That little type 4 needs all the help it can get, even if it's only a couple of ponies! But I'm definitely using the stock FI.

The HE's and muffler are already installed. Do you have all the other associated parts available?

Sounds like the heavy lifting has been done for you
The remaining work, aside from replacing the heater box cable, is really simple and can be easily done as time allows and when you find the parts.

For the cable….I’m thinking it needs to be longer.
If you have a creative streak, and a good hardware store and maybe a good bicycle shop nearby…you can get by with a home made solution

Pull handle, open lever on heater box
Once you see the geometry of the new boxes installed….you will see what is required.

It’s not terribly hard to replace the cable, just detail oriented and time consuming.

Ran into this when I backdated my exhaust many years ago. Driver's side was fine, but the passenger side was just a bit too short. You can still make it work, but likely the flap won't fully close.

Just noticed that the tube leading to the passenger heater flapper on mine is different than I've seen in other pics. I think the one I'm using came with the SSI's I bought used a long time ago, and I used it because it was in better shape and more stout than what I had as the metal was slightly thicker than what the original was. It might be stainless steel.
Hard to tell from the photo because the angle they photos were taken at are different, but maybe the bend is just a bit less on it compared to the stock piece (shown in photo on the right) and that's why the issue with the cable?

You mean on the Left? Yeah, so that's likely the issue with why there was an issue with the cable on mine and maybe what others have run into.
