Why do replacement CV joint boots have six holes instead of the four like original.
Is it so the grease has a spot to leak out in a few years and splash all over. I am getting pissed at aftermarket stuff not made right and I find this out six months after purchasing. Why are there six holes. In my quest for originality I WANT IT RIGHT (I know most don't give a crap) but I do! My rant for today thanks for watching. |

The 914 boot is the same size as the stock VW Bug boot. You wound think it should be a simple program NOT to drill the 2 holes. Manufacturers don't see a market.

Add a little piece of HVAC foil sealing tape to the underside of the flange over the unwanted openings. May not look original but should stop the leak concern.

You got me wondering since it has been a LONG time that I did anything with CV joints, including even looking at them.
Are the 4 hole boots every 90 degrees, or every 60 (like a 6 hole), just 2 of them aren't punched/drilled out? Aren't the boots the same for a -4 and -6? The -6 uses 6 bolts I believe, so it would seem to make sense to make something that fits both. Easier to plug a hole (tape or silicon caulk) than make one. |

Thinking a plastic plug would accomplish closing the hole. Even a metal claw plug might work too.

The diameter of the boot is larger than the CV joint.. Add that to the list of concerns.

I’m going to put a bead of silicone around the perimeter of the joint, and hope for the best. I think the spinning CV will shoot out some grease. Because new CV have different diameters at either end, I don’t think a gasket will help..

Why can't someone make a correct design reproduction??
i found a set of OEM NOS ones that i installed last year when i had to pull the transmission to do the RMS seal , so no more flinging grease around! Cant remember what world member i bought them from but i am glad i grabbed them. Phil |

These are the woes of owning a 50 year old car in a small market. Just yesterday I was complaining, to myself in the garage, about some aftermarket deviation and realized I was lucky to have something vs nothing. Those holes can be welded shut then sanded or milled. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Pardon my ignorance, but which six holes are you referring to? The holes for the CV bolts? Do 914's use four holes to mount?

Because its a Beetle part that EMPI is selling to 914 owners.
Same difference with the Beetle CVs that are now appearing on 914s. Same size, same hole spacing, but for some reason the 914 part uses 2 roll pins and 4 bolts instead of 6 bolts. Zach |
