Thanks for the enlightenment.
Can the stub axles/output shafts be drilled for two more bolts? Are there a couple of unused bosses back there? Why the hell would they do that when every other Porsche/VW product had 6? |

Because its a Beetle part that EMPI is selling to 914 owners. Same difference with the Beetle CVs that are now appearing on 914s. Same size, same hole spacing, but for some reason the 914 part uses 2 roll pins and 4 bolts instead of 6 bolts. Zach It's that awesome Type 4 power! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif) |

looks like the new cv joints are 90 mm od, and the factory originals are 94mm. So, the booties have an extra 4mm to let grease fly out. The holes for the roll pins are 10mm, and the bolt holes on the new cv joints are 8mm. I guess I should enlarge the roll pin hole to 10mm so they will fit better, and make them the same as the flanges on the rear axle and transaxle.

I'm reviving this thread to see if anyone has found a source for CV Joint boots with the 4-bolt flanges, or a better solution for the 6-bolt boots?
I recently replaced both axles/CV joints with the pre-built axles from PMB, and the boots are slinging the grease out. The grease appears to be coming mostly from the empty holes in the boot flange where the roll pins are located. I do have a pair of the old 4-hole boots that I removed from the old axles that I plan to install on the inner joints so that I can keep an eye on them, but I need to find a solution for the two outer joints. I was wondering if anyone has tried drilling and tapping the 10mm roll pin holes in the CV Joint for a short 12mm bolt at the boot end of the CV Joint - keeping the roll pin at the other end? This would not only seal the empty boot flange hole, but also form a tighter seal of the boot flange against the CV Joint (and allow the use of 3 retainer plates instead of 2). But, since CV Joints are hardened steel, I did not know if this is something that would require a machinist. |

Here is your answer. Price is STUPID. Then you add $20 for boot and clamp. Your are at $65 per set up.

I like Marty’s idea of covering the holes from the inside with the foil tape. There’s no plug that will work because the metal flange sits flush with the surface of the CV. A little RTV is a good idea regardless to keep the grease in.

Thanks for the responses.
I looked at my old 4-bolt boot/flanges, and unfortunately the boot is not clamped on to the flange, but pressed in. So, I don't think I will be able to re-use those flanges with new clamp-on boots as there is no lip to hold the boot in place. Regarding the new separate boots (901.332.293.10) & flanges (914.332.228.01), I'm curious why PET states these are only for 914-6? |
