Hi everyone,

My name is Shaun and since recently I am a proud owner of a 914 1,7.
I have restored 2 cars previous to this and won't go as far as to say I'm any professional in any way.

The 914 is a 1970 with matching numbers and came all the way from California to here in the Netherlands where shes parked in in my garage in Amsterdam.

I say 1,7 as thats what the title says but it has 2 pretty large carbs which could be an indication of engine work. For now it's not clear which type of carbs as the weather hasent been kind and it's been too cold to take the engine out yet.

The car was sprayed "resale red" somewhere in the 80s but was originally metallic blue and came with fog lamps and the Amca centre console, fuch wheels and 2 unlucky rats which I found in their traps under the seat and under the fuel tank. Amazingly enough the fuel tank and the windshield water tank both came on the container ship full. The fuel was rank and I emptied 15 litres of brown fuel that smelt more like diesel and then binned the tank as it was so rusty that the amount of work vs a new tank made no sense.
The interior is needless to say shot. Holes, tears and cracks.
The body is pretty good. There's surface rust but it's ok. The floors need work and of course the hell hole which actually is not too bad. Saying that, it needs to be cut out and rewelded.
The targa is completely destroyed and it would seem someone tried to crowbar it open at one point but I managed to score a new one.
The PO welded the trunk so to install the porsche reflector and a electronic trunk opening system. Plus it would seem 911 brakes have been installed.
The engine is a non runner, gear box sounds like a can of marbles.
Electrics dead
Brakes don't work.
Not one rubber is ok

There's work to be done. My wife, who shares my passion for cars is curious to what I make of it.

Plan : strip, weld, sand, paint. That's this year. Original colour L98.
Chrome bumpers, leather interior.


I plan to ask many questions. There's a world of knowledge here.


The car had been parked in a garage in the US since 88 and was never driven.

Welcome to the 'world' and what a project! Lots of people with great experience and info on here to help. My brother lived in Amsterdam for years, what a great city.

Have you pulled the longitudinal covers yet? That area can really inform you of the kind of work you might have in front of you.

These cars are very easy to work on for most things, much easier than any other car I have worked with.

I have so far pulled out the tank ... rust under it
Hell Hole Rust ..
Floor pans rust ...
Longitudinals are scheduled for next weekend.

Welding started with new rear panel. Thats in place now...

I got the dash out .. and the most of the trim. The rubbers are simply shot ...

Next month when its warmer we will start cutting and welding ..

I have a buddy who welds and we have loads of fun working on our cars. we cut a piece and weld a piece. Whats the rush anyways. The fun is in the repair.

Wow thats a lot of rust in that floor for a California car! i wonder if it was somewhere else before that?? My car was originally a Ohio/Indiana car which wound up in the california desert, and it had less rust than that,(no hell hole rust just longs jack points and rear floor pans which had to be cut out and replaced)

I'm sure it will be a worthwhile project, looking forward to watching your progess, certainly worse cars have been resurrected!.

Welcome Shaun...
It is absolutely correct that a lot of knowledge can be found on this platform.

I would suggest however to join the Porsche 914 club Holland... It is indeed a Dutch club supported by Porsche Classic but the members are a mix of Dutch and Belgians.

During the year we have tours, workshops and "wrench days".... During the workshops a member of the technical board will dive deep into a certain item... like heating, ignition, led conversion, FI etc etc.

During the "wrench" days we have the opportunity to work on our own cars in a professional equipped garage assisted by mechanics and other members.

Hey Dax , LS,

Its another year before I'm even closing in on driving to any garage. But I'm sure to look into membership locally.

If all goes to plan I should be all welded in and solid by the summer. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welder.gif)

To give you an idea of how bad it is , the accelerator pedal came loose in my hands and this is bolted to the floor. The clutch can be pressed in but doesn't return. That's soaked in WD40 for now. Ive watched the youtube channel CT and I feel his pain with the rust ! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

The Car was closed in a Californian garage in 1988 and only found its way out a year ago.

My Fiat 124 also came out of 'Sunny California' .. but when I stripped the car I found holes everywhere. A closer look at the reg showed San Francisco .. means salt and also rain.

So dry California is dependant on where. ! But its a cool marketing trick. Always double check. I was just happy to get one real cheap.

But hey these 914s are going up in value like crazy ... I believe the result will be worth it.
