Thanks Everyone. I have so far pulled out the tank ... rust under it Hell Hole Rust .. Floor pans rust ... Longitudinals are scheduled for next weekend. Welding started with new rear panel. Thats in place now... I got the dash out .. and the most of the trim. The rubbers are simply shot ... Next month when its warmer we will start cutting and welding .. I have a buddy who welds and we have loads of fun working on our cars. we cut a piece and weld a piece. Whats the rush anyways. The fun is in the repair. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) Wow thats a lot of rust in that floor for a California car! i wonder if it was somewhere else before that?? My car was originally a Ohio/Indiana car which wound up in the california desert, and it had less rust than that,(no hell hole rust just longs jack points and rear floor pans which had to be cut out and replaced) I'm sure it will be a worthwhile project, looking forward to watching your progess, certainly worse cars have been resurrected!. I enjoyed reading your build .. really nice ! thanks, its been a 15 year journey, and i drove it for 10 years with rusted out floors and the outer jack point on rea4r longs had fall en out completely and had to be rebuilt BUT my hell hole and battery tray were solid no rust at all. Other places we did find rust were behind the sail panel , one of the door jams, etc, but my trunks were in excellent shape as well, and your front trunk looks good from the pictures. how do the wheel wells look/ in front right in front of the doors? that is another spot that traps a lot of water and will rust, and the front and rear seal channels, i had to have those cleaned up and a bit of repair but not too bad. look to Restoration Design for new floor pans and other body parts you may need. Nice upgrade by the way ! yes this is a nice upgrade!! i had my oem set of gauges modified by the late Al Garcia, and my current set were done by Timothy_ND28, i won them in the door prize drawing at Okteenerfest about 7 -8 years back now. very worth the effort to do this or have him do it for you. So there should be 2 of them... Why did it fall out the rev counter and not the speedo ? Nice upgrade by the way ! There are three in the tach - two for directional arrows and one for the high beam indicator. Probably just a looser fit than the others is why it dropped out. |

Ah I see what you mean. Ok clear Ive put it back in and cleaned up the glass. I was happy it was glass and not plastic. The surrounds have just been sanded, primed and painted gloss black. As well as the gauges surround. Very satisfying.
I was not fond of pulling the dash off .. what is with those 2 plastics nuts hidden under the back of the gauges. ITs off now but ..here we go ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sheeplove.gif) Plus the one thing that escapes me is the vinyl pad that surrounds the defrost vents. I cant find it at any spare parts shop and does this come off from behind ? |

Not entirely clear on the question. The vinyl is available for replacement (914Rubber or AA ought to have it). To get it off - the underlying metal dash frame will need to be removed. The vinyl is glued to the metal and it wraps around the leading edge. Effectively capturing it between the dash structure and the windshield surround sheetmetal.
The black rubber trim between the dash and the windshield glass is much easier to replace with the dash frame removed as well. Note: based on the size of the wrinkle and the fact that all the dash top nuts weren’t plastic on your dash top bolster, suspect that someone may have tried to replace the vinyl previously. The non-stock machine turned dash face is another tell that someone else has had the dash apart previously. It also is had to tell from the picture but it sort of looks like the rubber filler trim had maybe been cut as they tried to replace the vinyl? Pictures are worth a 1000 words. Doing quite a bit of guessing based on the 1 photo that you posted earlier. |

Thanks for having a look. A trained eye indeed. Ok so i checked 914rubber and you were right .. its right there. cheers ! I got the dash out and the metal frame. it actually looks ok. ill blast it and give a coat of paint. the todo list grows. |

Welcome to the world. The right place for the right information on your 914 and more. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) Best Bob B Thanks Bob, Everything can be fixed with time and patience. Rust is just one hurdle of many. Yesterday I scored a correct steering wheel and the horn pad. Few days ago a targa top and some other bits. I'm looking forward to saying the body work is done. I have most of the trim off. The PO cut out the door frames to accommodate the electric window motors so I'm gonna have a good think about them. The metal dash frame is now out exposing a fuse box full of rat shit. The list of parts hitting the bin is getting longer. Plus the engine and gearbox are non runners. What madness awaits me there. With some luck the engine is ok.. Luck.... |

You’re doing just fine. You have a great attitude towards this.
Stay the course and you will have awesome stories to share. Will be following. BTW if that is a Racemark steering wheel, try to preserve that baby as well. If not it’s still a cool looking wheel. Keep going (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |

Looks like lots of work to do, but if you enjoy time in the garage, you should be happy for many months--that was true for me.
