Hi Members,
i can use some expert help with an issue.

We have removed the motor from my 1970 914 1.7 L to make it easier to remove and replace the push rod tubes and seals.
My car is the earlier model 914 1.7L eng # W0048922.
We are now having issues pressing the tubes and seals back into the head( outer side) does'nt seem to fit.

Pelican has recommended different seals and tubes. We have tried seals from 3 suppliers and still the outer ( larger seal) does not fit when we press the tube back in.

The replacement tube from Pelican is JP Dansk 021-109-335c.
the seals are
small inner- 021-109-345-A-M30
large outer- 021-109-349-Int.

We have even cleaned up the old Push rod tubes and tried to use those with new seals and still have issues with the seals going in .

any help advise would be greatly appreciated.
I am located in So cal.

you have the pushrod tubes with the smaller heads. If you need a tube you must order it used as the earlier ones are no longer made, along with the corresponding smaller seal on the head side

I went with Mcmaster Carr seals, I had trouble with the O-Rings leaking. Install with Grease. 2 sizes.. one for the top and one for the bottom.

No leaks since I switch over. Someone on the forum recommended them....they are a very tight fit... but work!

Measure the id of your pushrod tube ends, then match them up to the Mastercarr square O rings. Order O ring grease also.

I don't think those will fit in a very early motor. The bores in the cylinder heads for the pushrod tubes are a smaller diameter, so if those are intended for most Type IVs they won't fit those early heads.

The OP has discovered what I found out a few years ago when I rebuilt my early 1970 model year 1.7 liter engine. The early 1.7's used pushrod tubes with ends that are not the same dimensions than the pushrod tubes used in later engines. There is a small end which fits into the head and a larger end that fits into the case. As to the pushrod tube o-rings, the Victor Reinz engine gasket sets I have purchased in past years always had both the smaller and larger o-rings needed for the early 1.7 engines. Even the green Viton pushrod o-ring sets I purchased had both sizes of o-rings in them to handle the early pushrod tube engines.
