These guys do weird stuff, sometimes it can be applied to the real world.

They make windows into a simple 4 cylinder and vid what happens at different fill levels.

Why it might be interesting to members...

This shit can and will happen inside ANY wet sump engine that is used in high G applications (I.E. SPORTSCARS!) when the oil gets moved around via corning, braking, acceleration, and so forth.

Even with the correct level this can be a problem and this video better shows what actually happens than any other I've seen yet.

Interesting how at high revs there's a lot of bubbles in the oil which likely could be picked up in the oil system. Their oil looks more like cooking grease.

Yep, air entrained into the oil destroys the hydrostatic wedge effect and can allow the crank to actually touch the bearings at speed.

This is DEATH in my book!

Fixes are:

Better windage trays- can be very helpful as long as the design is correct.

Adding an accumulator into the pressure system; Accusump. This is a 60 second band aid.

Changing to dry sump. Vastly expensive, more maintenance and more places to leak.

My "normal" route is better windage trays/trap door baffles and the Accusump.

The Accusump has another positive. You can pressurize the oil system BEFORE the crank rotates during start up. Floats the crank off of the bearings.

I happened to stumble on this same video this morning over breakfast. I will never worry about overfilling any of my cars crankcases by a few millimeters ever again. That guy is hilarious. Is he Russian? And how about running that engine indoors, no wonder he is a bit bonkers. This is a must watch for sure.

There are finned deep sump 'oil pans' for the type 4, I've always wondered why they weren't more popular... maybe just because of ground clearance on 914 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

He's got a bunch of videos...
Some are so far out there as to initially appears as a "gags".

They make stuff work that I would have bet against.

Often my first question is "WHY?"

Looks like they have fun doing it! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ninja.gif)
