I just happened to have been browsing some parts suppliers. I remember some posts about having to “trim” the new Dansk tanks. I happened to see 2 different part numbers available. I am assuming 1 is early, and 1 is late…?.???…. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

There is a mid version that no one makes.

On my 74, I bought the late version and moved the brackets over from my original tank for the metal expansion tank.

Dansk makes both versions but most suppliers don't take the time to specify. It took a return and replace to get the right one for my street car. The trimming is also needed for the plastic bracket as the rib on the top is too tall by about 5mm

yeah, one of those quirks of the 74 between them shifting the charcoal can off the fuel tank in frunk in late nov 73 and fitting the plastic expansion tank in may 74. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

deleted the little clip slot for the cannister strap on the upper tank seam.
(cant remember if the bolt fitting towards rear of tank on back side upper surface is also deleted. have to have a look again. think that is still there?).

different brackets for plastic expansion tank.

i had a thought a few years back that maybe the USA tanks got the cannister clip fittings on them from 70-late nov 73 and the euro tanks did not. thought maybe that the 74 USA cars with the quirky tank actually might have just got a standard euro tank from 70-74 but there is no evidence of that in parts catalogue. have a euro parts catalogue and nothing in there to show there was a part number for a tank minus the cannister clip.

another one of those 74 L jet mysteries - plenty of them in the PET catalogue. mystery shared with any of the 74 2.0s that come after late nov 73 up to may 74. any 74 2.0 pre nov 74 has got the same tank as all 70-73s.

its a very minor detail and the early tank for the 74 with metal expansion tank fits properly. just has that cannister clip which the originals did not have.

914 201 010 10 is the early tank for metal ex tank
914 201 010 12 is the later tank for plastic expansion.

very suggestive there might have been a 914 201 010 11 (= mystery tank?).
possibly was during production. but deleted as a spare part for just XXXX 10 as a universal replacement? .......and Dansk follow suit.

one month earlier than that dr. its 11/73. changeover is weekend 17/18 Nov 73.
for tank style 1. thats when the charcoal can goes to the engine bays.

tank style 3 with plastic expansion tank begins pretty much thereabouts may 10 1974.
approx 2 months of 74 MY get the plastic tank like the 75 on.

and in between is tank style 2 from 11/73 tp 05/74 thereabouts.
tank style 2 is a metal expansion tank as per earlier cars but the charcoal can fixing is deleted. its pretty easy to miss the detail on tank style 2. its a very small thing that is different. the correct tank from dansk for a 74 from 11/73 to early 05/74 is the early tank and you just put up with the charcoal can clip. or do what @Van B did buy the later tank and weld on the earlier brackets for metal expansion tank. though i better check that with Van as there could be more to that. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

all in the L jet data we compiled in history section of website.

@Van B what was the story with the charcoal can fixing on the tank.
do our cars have the pressing that takes the bolt at rear side as well as clip slot deleted?

that one is easy. its the very late 74 which is the same as the 75/76.
what Dansk calls the late tank. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

no worries Art. i'll send you a message with the list.

----------

re tanks and @Van B 's point about the 74s.

tank style 1 08/73-11/73 (up tp charcoal can change - late november).
same as tanks from 70-73. same old same old metal expansion tank.

Attached Image

has clip in upstand seam and pressing welded on rear upper surface for fixing charcoal can strap to.

Attached Image

tank style 2
late11/73-early05/74 deletes clip in upstand seam and pressing welded on rear upper surface. can is in the engine bay.
but still has same old same old metal expansion tank.

Attached Image

tank style 3 early 05/74 onwards.
goes to plastic expansion tank with different fixing brackets. continues to delete can clips and welded on bracket. can is in the engine bay.

Attached Image

to add to the mystery.
this is what the european cars had the whole time through to plastic expansion tank.
was the same as the 11/73 - 05/74 USA had.
metal expansion tank. no charcoal can fixing elements.
this is the car from the porsche museum collection.
silver euro twin carb 74 1.8. probable build date = early nov 1973.
very original car.

Attached Image

this is i believe the tank missing from PET.
i speculate it had a 11 right at the end of the part number instead of 10 or 12.

dansk make the early USA tank and the late USA tank but do not appear to make the euro70-74/mystery74USA tank.
none of this matters really if you are just making a functional set up.
you can use either of the two USA tanks.
but just say you were fussy. like chasing a restoration of an LE for instance.
its gonna have the mystery tank.
and to make a new one you are going to have to do the Van B/Art procedure on a late dansk tank.

Nailed it @wonkipop . Way easier to add the brackets to the “late” than to look at unsightly, unused, and incorrect evap brackets from the “early”

Sounds like if I end up purchasing a new tank, it will be the late one.

Thank you all for the input, you all are great! Love this place. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
