Hi. I have to order a replacement door jamb VIN decal and was wondering if I can decipher the production month from the VIN number.
VIN# is 4732927649 Pretty annoying that the PO removed it when they painted the car because the CA. DMV is having a fit over it. |

you can get the production date info from the chassis tag on the bottom of the A pillar on the body inside the door.

VIN# is 4732927649 Pretty annoying that the PO removed it when they painted the car because the CA. DMV is having a fit over it. I went through this as well with my Beetle that had fallen out of the system. You can get a CHP inspection if you wish instead of replacing the door jamb sticker. Free, although it is a pain to set up. You do have to make an appointment. The DMV gave me the paperwork at the time they told me they could not put me back into the system because the door jamb sticker was damaged. Thankfully I got "officer friendly" when I went for the inspection. Not the case when I went to set up the appointment. Good luck! |

Sadly, that tag is gone. I might have it in the piles of stuff that come with the car so I'll search. Is there another location for the chassis number? I found the VIN number on the front fender and it has the windshield tag too. But can't find chassis code so I can figure out the month.

Car sat in a barn in Santa Cruz for 20 years before I got it so all the stuff is out of the DMV system. For obvious reasons they are careful about mystery cars.

Check the rear trunk. There might also be a chassis number there.

Where in the trunk? I'll start scraping paint if I know where to start.

passenger side of trunk floor. May be difficult to find/discern - maybe shading over it on some paper with the side of a pencil will help reveal...

Chassis # may also be found handwritten in crayon under the dash surface. Pull the ashtray and use mirrors/good lighting.

Found it.
After some scraping and brushing I see: 2949544 I'll see if I can decode it. Thanks so much. The support this forum gives is mind blowing. |

It looks like you have it figured out...
But, if you didn't have the chassis number you could look through the member vin numbers page and some of them have the chassis numbers or build dates listed and you can usually figure out your month. There is one listed within 10 numbers of yours that shows a build date of July 1973. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act...amp;byYear=1973 |

My number is 092 9015 built 02/75. So this would make it February 25th, (9th week) 2nd day (Tuesday), the 15th car, (015)?

Was it made in July of 1973? Or July of 1972 for the 1973 model year? I would think that by July they would be making the next years' cars. |
