Greetings all, I recently purchased a 1974 914 with a stock 1.8 FI I found this forum in doing research on parts and tech advice. So I signed up and here I am..
I do belong to a few other sites that are helpful with other cars and I seem to be having issues when searching .. So it may be user error but I seem to be having trouble when search on here.. Currently trying to figure out why I have no brake lights, so I simply searched on here "No Brake Lights" or brake switches or brake lights.. I get thousands of threads and sometimes it will take me reading dozens of post's just to find anything related.. Maybe I'm searching wrong, I usually just go on the main page and hit search and type in a term.. Am I doing something wrong, any and all help is appreciated ![]() ![]() |

Currently trying to figure out why I have no brake lights, so I simply searched on here "No Brake Lights" or brake switches or brake lights.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) Did you actually put quotes around your search terms? Because when i search for "No Brake Lights" with quotes, i only get 3 pages worth of results. That link goes no where. Did you check the light bulbs? The switch at the master cylinder might be bad. How many miles are on the car?

Power to rear tail lights is on the drivers side in the engine bay..
Then to the relay board Then to the pedal Then to the fuse Test at all locations for power. Quick test, based upon how nice the car looks would be your grounds at the taillights them selves. Btw, find all the main grounding points, clean them well…it’s 50 years old And Jeff’s site https://bowlsby.net/914/WiringHarnesses/ |

Awesome, another original 1.8! You have a few of us on here keeping these things alive as designed yeah but there is a price for helping. he has to give wonkipop vital historical data concerning his car and feed it down the historical rabbit hole. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) nice looking car. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif) |

Besides wiring and a fuse, the brake lights are controlled by a switch under the pedal board in the cabin connected to the brake pedal. Maybe start there. |

Thanks, everyone for the words of encouragement..
I've always loved these cars and being a VW man I actually had a bus with a similar motor once which my friend an I rebuilt. Obviously I can tell right off the bat I see many differences.. This car was somewhat of an impulse buy, wasn't really even looking just searching marketplace one morning as I do most mornings and I saw it listed 30 min ago in the next town over.. I did a little boning up online about what to look for, shot over looked it over drove it made the guy an offer he said yes.. I wish I'd have done a bit more looking it over and the guy selling it was a little bit of a fast talking salesman who kinda lied about a few things but all in all its a pretty solid car with everywhere i look it doesn't seem to be missing a lot.. The paint job re-sell red looks nice but its a fast job with lots of sprayed bolts, and a few places they didn't tape so good but its mine now.. After day one when I broke the door handle off in my hand I wasn't so sure but now a few weeks in i'm starting to love and admire her more and more, so i think I'll stick with it for a while.. Glad this place and you all are here to help, thanks.. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Oh..thanks...I already got one off ebay and installed it, the door panels very similar to some vw's I've had and everything went as expected....
Cost me about $100 with shipping for a nice used one.. Thanks, everyone for the words of encouragement.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) Besides wiring and a fuse, the brake lights are controlled by a switch under the pedal board in the cabin connected to the brake pedal. Maybe start there. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Sometimes the little lever on the brake switch gets bent and the brake pedal doesn't actuate the switch. |
