From the engine bay picture here are a few thoughts if I compare to mine (1972 1.7L engine with carb)
- On my installation, there is a hose that connects the oil filler tube to one of the carb. I guess it is to vent the case and send the oil vapor to the combustion chamber - On your distributor, you seem to have the vacuum advance (retard) ''device''. In mine, I don't have this - You have the hoses coming to and back from the charcoal canister. The return from the charcoal canister goes where? It should go in the air intake to end up in the combustion chamber - You seem to be missing the cooling flap connecting rod. I am sure that you will get other thoughts, but quickly and with my short experience, this is what I see |

Shivers, sadly no. I'm a few hours West of that, closer to the Thousand Oaks area. Hey there - Congrats on your project and you're in the right place for great info & moral support! Sounds like I am nearby - quite a lot of 914s in SoCal but only a few right around here that I know of. Lemme know if I can help in any way! I definitely echo advice to go-thru the brakes. Wouldn't be surprised to find fluid like maple syrup and seals dried-out. Rear caliper venting is frequently maladjusted also. |

The car is fixed! LMAO! Only a few months late yea?
Sorry for the dead silence hahah. Didn't mean to be a one-post-Andy who leaves after their first post and the car is never heard from again. Anyways... I did as much as I could and it still wouldn't reliably start... so I took it to a shop. I'm glad I did though because he found things we just would not have found. Apparently the fuel tank was terrible! He dropped the tank, had it cleaned, and showed us all the garbage that was sitting around/inside. Doesn't run GREAT... but does run (sometimes)! Also installed the shift linkage bushings for us. Great guy. Had us fill it with premium gas to help flush out the rest of the system. So, since doing that, it likes to not start half the time... takes some fiddling. But it eventually does turn on. Shifting is a miserable experience, but apparently that's pretty normal. So, ultimately, I'm not too worried about that. Now is time to start interior work... I'll update you all as it goes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

Congrats on getting it to move under its own power! I'm assuming your mechanic replaced all the fuel lines given that he refurbed the tank, but if not, you should. Also consider replacing the lines in the center tunnel with stainless. A few vendors sell them.
Nice looking car! |

Shifting is a miserable experience, but apparently that's pretty normal. So, ultimately, I'm not too worried about that. On the tail shifters it really is. Keeping the shifter bushings fresh and a short shift kit was the only relief I could find with my 72. I put a link down below https://sierramadrecollection.com/products/...6d48747c6d56d2c |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Maybe we are lucky with our tail shifter but shifting on our car is not difficult at all. Only getting 1st gear could be challenging at times, but that's all. I have refresh the bushings on the shifting shafts, the 2 balls on near the fire wall and replace the transmission oil a few times now. Maybe some whishfull thinking, but I would replace the transmission oil if not already done. |

But, if this is the cost of a running car, so be it lol. Well. Half-running. It likes to start less and less as time goes on. Carburetor burping/backfire, etc. Maybe an exhaust leak or fuse. Entire fuel line is redone, with new carbs, so likely something smaller. Good call on the transmission fluid. I'll get on it within the next couple weeks. |

Proper valve adjustment is a must do on any solid lifter car. I have done it on any
914 that has been sitting a long time. William |

I don't see anything on your post about checking the dwell or the timing.
You should do this also. I also use real gas no ethanol. William |

- You seem to be missing the cooling flap connecting rod. This is a biggie! The flaps are very important to the function of the cooling system, they direct air to where it should go. It is very common for 914s to overheat if someone removes those flaps because they think they "just get in the way". There's a good chance that, since the rod connecting the flaps is gone, that the flaps themselves are gone. These flaps live under the engine tin, close to the front of the motor where they connect to the fan shroud. The connecting rod should go across the motor in front of the oil filler tower. Here is a thread about the cooling flaps: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=112369 Here is a video that talks about them-- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewDrRRun53o --DD |
