it pops out.

I have a 1972 914 with 1976 2.0 and tailshifter tranny.

I can get into 1st and reverse with no problem.

I can upshift to 2nd ok.

I can upshift to 3rd and 4th excellently.

I can shift into 5th fine but the shifter pops out immediately.

What is the likely culprit ??

Thanks,

Jim

You might want to check the engine mounts in the front and tranny mounts in the rear to see if they have ripped the rubber apart? If they are good, then check the set screws (both) to see if they are tight, then the bushings and finally the pinch bolt that clamps the front shift rod to the shifter as it can loosen. Good luck.

Would you say the pop out problem is not the tranny itself but some or one of the other things you mentioned? All my shift linkage bushings have be replaced - my tranny bushings are torn but looked to be stiff enough as to not move around - maybe they are though ??

Thanks
