Hello everyone. I recently purchased a used OEM intermittent wiper relay harness and it was supplied with a VW relay PN: 111 955 531. I followed the instructions on Jeff Bowlsby's website that was a copy of Sir Andy's post regarding the relay. My 914 is a 74. All wiring has been verified for their correct locations. Now here is the issue I am having. When I went to test the wiper system after installing the harness, I put the wiper stalk to the position below position 0 which is supposed to be for the intermittent function. When put into the position below position 0 the wipers run on low speed all the time. Now is the a relay issue not being the correct part number as OEM? According to the owner's manual it should operate once every 10 seconds if I remember reading it correctly.

Relay is factory correct. Make sure you have ground contact in wiper switch. Will get picture later.

Make sure you have ground contact in wiper switch. If i recall correctly, not all switch assemblies have that part. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) |

Thank you everyone so far for your input. My 74 1.8 is a 4/74 production and the owners manual stated if equipped with the intermittent wipers the position was below position 0. I did not know that even being pre-wired for the relay that there was a different wiper stalk.

As Andy said you have to break off the tab. Intermittent is DOWN. Center is off, one up is low and 2nd up is high.

I ended up pulling out my intermittent wiper relay because it would never turn-off the wipers fully. I'm thinking now that I must have used different steering wheel internals when I put everything together (had multiple sets). (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) |

Center right in picture @914Sixer - Thanks for the photo! But I'm going to need an arrow or a circle drawn on the image to understand where to look. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) Is it that black tab sticking up on the right hand side? |

I will take a look on my stalk, I know when I go down from off it goes down easily and clicks. I have 4 positions when I move the wiper stalk.

Here are a few pictures that might help:
This one circles the tab/tooth that others had referenced earlier in the thread. Note that the tab is on the turn signal switch: ![]() This is a shot of my signal lever showing where the tab/tooth used to be (red rectangle): ![]() IIRC, I cut it off using an X-acto knife, then sanded the area flush and smooth. Here are a couple of pictures with the wiper lever in different positions corresponding to high, low, and intermittent wiper speeds... High speed: ![]() Low speed: ![]() Intermittent: ![]() In that last pic you can see how the tab must be removed to allow the lever to move to the intermittent position. NOTE: I forgot to take a pic of the lever in "Off." Switch positions in order from top to bottom are "high," "low," "off," and "intermittent." Sorry for the dust--I haven't done my spring cleaning yet (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Hope this helps! |

I'm going to glom onto this thread instead of starting a new one.
I'm bench testing my wiper motor without the intermittent wiper relay in the circuit. 1. Connect ground. 2. Apply power to red/white or red/black (53a) (wipers park at the down position) 3. Apply power to black/blue (53) (wipers run at the slow speed; when black/blue is disconnected the wipers park) 4. Apply power to black/purple (53b) (wipers run at fast speed; when black/purple is disconnected the wipers park) When I apply power to the green/white (31b) the motor moves about 1/16" and stops. Shouldn't this initiate one cycle of the wiper arms, after which they should park? My understanding is that the wiper relay sends a periodic pulse through the green/white wire to trigger one cycle (one wipe). If I apply power to red/white(53a), black/blue(53) and green/white(31b) and then remove the black/blue(53), leaving power to red/white(53a) and green/white(31b), the motor continues to run with a tiny pause where it would normally park. It seems that once it gets started the green/white(31b) prevents it from parking. If I remove power to the green/white(31b), the motor parks and cannot be restarted with just power to green/white(31b). I also have to put power to black/blue(53). With the intermittent relay connected, if I put power to red/white(53a), green/white(31b) and blue/black(53) and then remove blue/black(53) it continues to run with a slight pause where it would normally park, BUT I hear the relay chirp at this point. I'm hoping that my wiper motor is working correctly and that my relay is bad. Am I testing this wrong? Thanks. George ![]() |
