I have a pair of Koni rear shocks that I was thinking about rebuilding. Is there a rebuild kit available, and if so, are they worth rebuilding? They came off a 914-6. What was the original rear shock on a six?

Koni used to offer a rebuild service for those back in the day. You may want to enquire.

The re-build service was close to the price of new parts last time I checked and doesn't come with a warranty (maybe 1 year?).

The new adjustable units are a bunch better!
They are yellow.

When you purchase new, they come with a LIFETIME warranty.
You can have Koni rebuild multiple times if needed.

My suggestion is new and make copies, both physical and electronic, of your receipt.

Most receipts fade with age...

If they aren't leaking too much and just a little soft you can adjust them and make them stiffer.

Check Pelican Parts, we bought ours during Koni sale (at cost); oe Porsche Koni p/n for the 9146 rear + direct from Germany (Freight free). We might re-paint orange*
*Use Autozone/ Krylon= Chev engine block orange (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

There are shock rebuild shops out there that are faster and cheaper than sending to koni. These are very simple shocks so it doesn’t take much to rebuild properly. You would rebuild the shock if it’s a special size or date coded part or if you want custom valving and/or adjustment knobs added for compression and rebound. If it’s just your run of the mill shock, buy new. It cheaper and faster.

Thank you all for your input. I brought them in from outside (cold here in Michigan) and let them warm up. On one of them when I fully extended it could not push it down. I think buying new ones is the way to go. As far as I can tell they are just stock shocks. I will paint the new ones red and put an original Koni sticker on the new ones.

@jrrobertson the small Koni stickers are readily available online, either in their historic style/or newer style. Go for the 1970's style (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

There is a place in Sonoma California that does Koni rebuild. Performance Shock.

According to the PDF parts catalog, 914-6 could have had Boge or Koni. Auto Atlanta sells reproduction Boge kits.

https://www.performanceshock.com/koni-service-page/

showing $300 each for single adjustable like yours

I use to send them many years ago for rebuild to Koni USA in Cincinnati OH
I don't know if they even do it anymore
they have since farmed it out to rebuilder shops

as mentioned above buy the new current yellow model
