So i tore down the first head last night, lots of crud under #3 exaust valve spring.

Don't the heads have guide seals? none on this head! or is it just clearance (valve to guide) that should have kept the crap out?

none that i know of on a stock 914 4 cylinder. My 356 Porsche is supposed to have them, but I have been told sometimes they don't (left out when rebuilt) Seems like you have a worm guide/valve stem issue. Many miles of use, or premature failure do to contamination or oil starvation will cause this to happen.

Sorry to hear this, the heads got to come off my Bug, cuase the spark plug blew out with the heads threads (bummer) and my 914 has been on jack stands for near two years. crap happens sometimes, chin up and get thru it.

best of luck in the repair.
