I’ve been running Dell’s (2xDRLA-40) since 1983-ish (!) and 120k+ miles. While the idle jets are somewhat prone to clogging, the Dell’s have been relatively trouble-free and offered good performance for more than 23 years.

@Osnabruck914 @anderssj I purchased my first set of NIB DRLA 40s from CB Performance around 1982. I have used and still own IDF 40-19, DRLA 40s, and DRLA 45s. I think a conservative estimate of our combined experience 70 years. Unfortunately our experiences are anecdotal, not empirical evidence. I have never published a peer reviewed paper on the subject durability DRLA carburetors or the application of DRLA carburetors applied to a Type IV engine installed in a Porsche 914.

If @dr914 @autoatlanta.com could make me aware of which accredited institution conferred his P.hD. in 914 studies. I realize my BSEE from the University of Delaware is stale. I am hopeful that my application and CV might be enough to gain me admission.

Until I gain that academic credential I humbly stand in the shadow of @dr914 @autoatlanta.com and his assessment of my intellect "Carlos that was stupid, stupid to say"

This is the first time I think I have ever heard someone say dells were crap. They are so terrible that empi decided to come out with their own version D-series I believe it was called since dells were no longer being made. Anyway, carbs, even weber ones can give their fair share of issues if not run daily. The ethanol gas these days it pretty much the worst. FI cars have dark wizardry that can compensate for this crap gas.

To the OP- there is a guy on the samba that will clean and rebuild your carbs. He does a pretty good job from what I have read. You could try the ultrasonic route. I have had great success in soaking them in there to clean out all the nooks. Unfortunately I have not cleaned a set for a few years so I can't provide much input on where to look. I can only advise in looking into the ultrasonic cleaner.

Looks like your most recent post has shown a positive direction. Good luck and stick with the dells.

my $5. says it's a clogged idle jet, one of my 40 IDF Webers had a tiny piece of fuel line that I finally found after dis assembling the carbs several times over two years. Keep the faith, victory is coming

the most competent mechanic in the world cannot deal with dellorto carbs, real junk when they get old, can them and buy webers if you must have carbs, even the empi dual 40s are much better than the CRAP-D carbs

Gee, after such a convincing and "scientific" assessment of Dells, I guess I will have to immediately rip them out of my car- NOT!!!!! I find Dellortos extremely durable, reliably stable, and well designed, especially for changing out jets in situ.

Yes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) , I have nice set just working on them now to finish refurb.
Bugger thought they were great as my last set were so easy to tune and my motor ran great , can't bin them as it was a customer motor that the new owner mentioned how well it ran after he recieved it.
I will bin the other set straight way ,seriously sounds like a random sweepings statement from George ...we already know he hates carbs but they have keep a lot of 914's on the road ....food for thought.
