I hope it does go all day at speed. Fingers crossed.

The engine in the mini feels good. It's the high compression 1.6. I have dug into it a little and I like it's simplicity. The CVT transmission? Yeah... Not confidence inspiring. Although I am sure that transmission is why the engine is so happy at 120000.

have fun in the 914 emery. should be a great drive. 914s were originally designed to be top of the pile long distance high speed cruisers. sit on 80 all day long if you wanted them to. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif)

Did lots of miles in my 1st teener - over 100,000. It’s great on the freeway.

Basic socket set, vise grips, a couple screwdrivers. Never needed anything more than that over the years.

Have fun (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

I am not in a hurry so I don't have to push it hard. I plan on drafting behind deer catchers, I mean large trucks, as much as I can. And by drafting I mean a good 4 seconds minimum behind them. I have never seen so many deer on the road.

When I told my wife she said "there are no airbags". With that look.

i've been adopting similar strategy on the trips i have been making up to my uncles farm all this year. its a drought here and lots of roos on the move outside their usual hours.
im using the trucks in front of me to do the hoovering. just have to stay far enough back you can avoid the ones that go under under rather than bounce off the front of the trucks. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

I've often felt that my 914 can make longer trips then I can make in it. After a 4-5 hour stint driving my 914 I am usually DONE. Whereas I can make 12+ hour days in the 4Runner. (and I just got back from a 3200 mile road trip where we took the boring, dependable 4Runner to texas and back). On Thursday I pulled a 15 hour drive, with some stops along the way to stretch. I could never do that in the 914, though the car itself would be fine.

I've seen your 914 Zach, if I remember right the interior was a bit .. rough?

I am hoping the butt cushion adds some miles.

I did add some rain antifog to the inside and regular rain to the outside of the windshield.

It looks like it's going to be very hot on the way back. That has me a little concerned.

If you didn’t get the inflatable lumbar - being a t-shirt or towel you can use as needed for lumbar support

The car won’t care about the heat. Hopefully you do OK. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Take lots of breaks and it’ll be easier on your body if you can stretch regularly.

Godspeed! Whenever I tell my friends I have a 914, they all say "You NEVER see those on the road anymore!"

When I was very young, I had a TR6. For some odd reason, I had thrown a driveshaft in the trunk and just not removed it. Folks were always "impressed" that I carried a "spare driveshaft" with me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Well, the better half put her foot down. Something about being irresponsible.

I have to admit this may not be the appropriate time for my little trip. I need to make sure my son makes it there and back more than I need to go for a drive. And truthfully, the idea of driving back in nearly 100 degree heat isn't making me look forward to it.

Sigh. Next time.

I know... Now I am going to have to find some other excuse for a longer drive. Maybe a visit to tangerine racing or something.

I prefer "well loved."
Like the velveteen rabbit.
But yes, I built my car 15 years ago, and have driven it through everything but deep snow. Mechanically its great, but the paint and interior are due for a refresh.

When it comes down to it, the lack of AC and lack of heat and all the cabin noise are what do me in. The car itself will go all day, but I need to drop about 50lbs to road warrior the car the way I used to.

I’ve enjoyed plenty of long distance drives in my teener
I carry a ton of spares so that I’ll never need them

Came back from a rt66 a few years back and did 1009 miles straight in one day

14 hours
Drove through 3 snow storms on 3 separate passes that day

I appreciate interests in long distance trips in the 914, however at 83 and living in the south the lack of AC is a killer. My Altima gets 42 mpg at a steady 80 and has 12 hour seats, so any hot weather trips (long or short) are with that car. Plus it's got trunk room for our golf clubs & a weeks worth of luggage. That leaves me open to pack all of this as well.

And I would love to do rt66 but 14 hours is beyond comfortable for me.
