76 2.0, 130,000 miles. I used to run Brad Penn 30 with high ZDDP, a very “ sticky” oil. It stopped the little bit of smoking from the exhaust. (probably worn rings). The newer oil is called Penn oil, and I don’t think it’s the same as the original Brad Penn formulation. Now the engine is smoking a little again. Can anyone recommend a replacement/equivalent oil to my old stickyBrad Penn oil?

Actually the old Brad Penn (green oil) was rebadged A DECADE ago as PENN GRADE 1, Same formulation. Other than your car smoking ...again, after 10 years Id say it seems to have held up pretty well?

I can't recommend an oil to help your car stop smoking, but I can say I moved from Brad Penn to Driven DT50 once the oil formula changed. I'll be moving to Driven GP-1 for my autocross car soon to better handle the heat soak it gets with 2 drivers.

You could try some of those magic sauces at the flaps, at 130000 it's gonna be smokey.

I use Driven 15w/50w oil. You said your seeing smoke at the tail pipe. Do you need to add oil after so many miles to top off your oil? If so how much?

Castrol 20W50 was the recommended air cooled oil for eons, I use the Brad Penn 20W50 synthetic blend
I remember asking an old VW mechanic years ago for a recommended brand; "Any clean oil is better than dirty oil". |

What's the important properties beside Zinc, that make you guys so dedicated to one brand or another?
I see some awfully cheap oils with significant zinc numbers. |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Seriously, I switched to Brad Penn because it was designed for older cars with flat tappet engines, at the time it was one of the very few on the market. |

Driven oil is recommended by Jake Raby. He helped develop this oil for 914's after Brad Penn changed formulas. I add 4 oz. of Marvel Mystery Oil to every other fill up to clean the injectors.. Mistery oil, it's a mystery how it works. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif)
