doing my periodic research trawl into european spec 74 914s and this came up.
very good condition 71. looks to me on studying the photos to be highly original. even the paint. but you always got to see them in the metal to know. have a real soft spot for early cars in minimalist trim. willow green with brown interior combo is outlandishly moon age. been looking a little closely at one of the images describing the car.
i take it this is the new form of the porsche certificate of authenticity? the one you pay about $1K aud for down here below the equator. surely this is horse (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stromberg.gif) ? ![]() ![]() delivery point = spain. ?????? what. is that what it says. a bit hard to read when you zoom in, but it looks like spain to me? its an american delivery car if the seller's description is correct. claims it was sold first in south dakota. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) also they name the transmission and engine number. which you never got on the older previous certificates. but the wording is quite ambiguous. engine number and trans number merely consistent with original equipment and options. ????? are these porsche technical certificate people merely reading the engine and trans numbers off the car itself and then saying ok thats the type of engine and trans the cars came with. correct me if i am wrong but the certificates are not actually doing what we call numbers matching. ie there is no reference here to an original build sheet or records with the the engine/trans numbers the car was built with? i dunno. but i'm thinking porsche tech certificates are a ,,,,,,,,,bit of a rip off? a bit of bullsh#t? |

i dunno. but i'm thinking porsche tech certificates are a ,,,,,,,,,bit of a rip off? a bit of bullsh#t? The record keeping for the 914s was a bit haphazard. When I bought the six from @Rusty , It came with 3 COAs. And they are all slightly different. One says it has a heated rear window. One doesn't have the engine number on it. And one doesn't match the chassis number in the rear trunk. So we chose the one with the heated rear window, as it has the correct chassis and engine number. The current replacement for the COA is not available by mail. Now you have to take it to a dealer to get the engine and chassis numbers confirmed. Porsche says this is to prevent fraud, i.e. re-stamped engine numbers, etc. So take the COA contents with a grain of salt. |

That car looks very nice but not sure that is the original rear bumper. I'm sure George can tell us approximately when they went to the bumper with the curved bottom rather than the straight line.
Otherwise very nice- and I'm obviously partial to '71's!! |

beautiful stock but with extra cost factory alloy wheels It looks to me like the gas tank may have been replaced with an aftermarket unit. Other than that nothing is jumping out at me as far as originality. Would love to see shots from underneath and also behind the wheels. Either original or VERY well done attempt to make it as original as possible. Love the brown interior dont see to many of those anymore and green on brown color combo. |

Either original or VERY well done attempt to make it as original as possible. Love the brown interior dont see to many of those anymore and green on brown color combo. found earlier failure to sell listing last year with alternative photo documentation. has a couple of underside shots. lists in detail work to recommission it. fairly extensive, but largely what you would expect after a long time in storage. https://www.pcarmarket.com/auction/1971-porsche-914-4/ yes the early brown interior is very interesting. the carpet is the perlon fuzz stuff. don't believe i have ever sighted that in brown before. mine is a later 74 brown interior with the speckled brown loop pile. looks like the perlon didn't suffer from the severe fade problem like the later brown carpets. love the brown cord seat cushions. pity the side stripe removal was done. bet anything the side stripes were original. they have left a ghost imprint after removal. the pedrnini wheels are a much more recent addition. listed in the work to recommission. ran steelies originally. |

I think it was what was in the bin till it ran out. My 1972 came with the old style bumper painted the same color as the car. Maybe the chrome was more popular and ran out of the old bumpers first, and the painted bumpers lasted a while longer. |

Maybe the chrome was more popular and ran out of the old bumpers first, and the painted bumpers lasted a while longer. likely bumpers were batched. and painted in batches too. seperate from body. what you say makes complete sense. would have been a stack of painted bumpers stockpiled in different colors to go with cars. they would have done those batches from time to time. it would not just be a matter of when the new bumpers came in, but rather when then stock of painted bumpers ran out. which was probably at different times depending on the base color of the cars and which ones they were selling more of. you can see why they would have went to black trim and bumpers in 73. gets a whole lot simpler to manage. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) also european tastes were swinging to black trim away from chrome anyway. but the body colored bumpers were i feel not just about economy on the part of VW or porsche. i think they genuinely were giving the car that minimalist cohesive look as a modernist designer state of mind. what we think of as the classic 914 look with vinyl sailplanes and chrome was more of a concession to dressing them up to standard tastes at the time. i've certainly rethought my views since i bought the car in 89. i now look at those early cars completely differently - they were out there rather than stripped or cheap? |

As much as I like the wheels, a non appearance group looks more "original" with steelies, and the earlly non-appearance cars even had 4 1/2" wide wheels if I remember correctly.
