I just acquired a bunch of parts with two parts cars that I bought, including a complete early 1.7 engine (W0095475).

The engine does not turn freely by hand; I haven't tried using leverage or lubrication to see if it will free up. I'm assuming whoever might want it would just want it for the case.

I'm looking for advice on setting a fair price that will move it along to someone who can make use of it. Because of size/weight my plan is to list it on CL to see if I can re-house it locally (I don't want to deal with freight shipping).

Unless it’s an 2.0, I’ve always just given away non running engines.
Maybe $100 …

Yikes! Given theJake Raby videos talking about robustness of the early cases I wasn't expecting this! Is there more money in selling the case by itself?

Or you can do like I do, Keep them around and build them into whatever displacement you'd like. I have three spare engines at this point in time.

That has crossed my mind, but I'm at that point in life that I'm also thinking about what kind of a mess I might leave behind for my kids to deal with..... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Yes because shipping is easier and less expensive. Maybe $150-200 if everything looks good and the studs don't break off in the case.

There's some value there if the case is rebuildable. So, enough dismantling to figure out its condition would be helpful maybe.

I have a note that says for early cases, you don't want between 2009406 up to W057094. Don't have anything written down regarding why, but probably because those cases are weaker? But, this case is outside those numbers anyway. Might make a big 4 up to even 3 liters if you want.

Given that it is a completely unknown status inside and there is corrosion on the outside, this is probably the best use for it. Emery is at least on the same side of the country as you, maybe work something out.

I often think about snatching up old lawn mowers that people throw out (and have done it a couple times..) to see if I can get a neighbor kid that is interested in tearing one apart. Mechanical skills are going away, it's the perfect way to learn the basics.
(my 30yr old daughter already does all her own car work).

Interesting! My wife's family is in Hollis, I go there frequently. Very tempting.

Would the story be different if it were a GA motor or another 2.0 block?

Yes, but not much. Ga allows you go bigger without block mods I believe and you might hope to salvage the heads.

I think it would be fun to tear it down and do a real slow rebuild, taking my time. Just never know how bad the block is until you dig in. A w shouldn't be too bad but you never know.

@didenpx Try VW Big Block Type 4 Engine on FB. You may have some luck there. The problem here is that you can't give away a 66mm crank and 1.7/1.8 rods.

I'm lost on the case differences. What I understood from the Raby cases video 2.0 cases have some relief for windage that makes the deck weaker. Maybe I'll watch it again.
