Also... If you are worried perhaps you haven't gotten it good and hot? My engine makes all kinds of racket till it warms up and all the clearances get to where they are supposed to be. My engine sounds and behaves best after a few very hot laps. Only car I have owned that is happier after a good flogging

Would still perform a leak down test, especially on #4 where that suspect adjuster was.

Another possibility is that the adjuster was set with way too much valve lash. If there was too much on that adjuster, it will cause more noise. Also, it might cause the marks on the adjuster face from the excessive pounding.

What's the end of the valve look like for that adjuster?

Unfortunately, I don't have the equipment (including an air compressor) to do a leak down myself at home, but will definitely explore shops nearby that can do it.

I'll take a look at the end of the C4 exhaust valve (and take pics) when I put the new adjuster screws (once they arrive in a couple of weeks).

Thanks.

Yes, I notice more noise at start up than after running for a bit. I don't believe that was the case before though.

That might hint at over tight valves before....

Hoping someone can help - which # is the correct part # for adjuster screws ('73 2.0): is it 022-109-451 or 039 109 451 (or will either work)?

I'm able to buy 022 directly from Porsche, but 043 does not come up. Thus, hoping the 022 part will work.

Wish I knew... Maybe check autoatlanta and see which it uses for the 73 914.

Do you have 8mm or 10mm adjusters?

Personally, we prefer the 911 adjusters (tool steel ones, not the ones in this link), but they do need some clearancing work done so they don't bind:

039 part numbers are for 2.0 engines, almost universally.

The 2.0 cars all had the 10mm adjusters. (As did the 1.8 cars.)

The 911 adjusters only fit rocker arms that are for 8mm adjusters, so some people switch to the early rocker arms to be able to use those. The arms still have to be milled a bit, though.

I have stock 73 2.0 rocker arms and adjusters. Not interested in switching at this time (although I’ve read good things about that enhancement). Just trying to get everything back to spec and sorted out. Mods can come later.

Hey Dave. Yes, awareof 039 Porsche part logic = 2.0. However, nobody appears to carry that part. Thus, asking if the 022 part # replaced it and is what I have to go with now. According to the Parts Catalog it looks that way, but hoping someone has firsthand experience and can confirm.

Noisy engine resolved, thanks to @BeatNavy . Issues discovered: all 8 adjuster screws had been pitted during the over rev (we replaced all of them), my feel for using the feeler was too liberal (gaps were too big), and 2 of the pushrods weren't fully seated in the rocker cups (and may have been rubbing in the tubes).
