nice work @SirAndy (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
i wasn't too far out with the 914 pic. 2km and the other side of the highway. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) was using the mountain range as the big clue. if it was australia there would not be another airfield for a 1000 km. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) germany (europe) - its so dense. two airfields looking at the same hills, 2kms apart is almost outside my imagination. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) i can see in your photos, yes the building you can just see the edge of with the gable is still there. and the apron area the 914 was parked on. and the road across the airfield just visible behind. amazing. half a century later. I must say, both your theories and pics are convincing. Now I'm really kornfused. Osnabruck914 @SirAndy is dead right. he has nailed it. the same range of hills is in the background of both airfields. the one the 914 was photographed is literally the other side of the highway. spitting distance. but its closer to the range of hills. the 911 shot is at the air field i came up with. the 914 is where sir andy says it is. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) edit google earth shot of two airfield locations. ![]() |

- given we have the when and the where.
who is the girl? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) i don't believe she is in other photo shoots for 73 or other years. or other porsches - ie 911. had a bit of a good look at factory publicity shots of the time. not there. but i think the other girl in the shoot does make another appearance. bit hard to tell for sure. would need a good res image of the airfield photo to know. ![]() i think she is the dark haired girl in these shots. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() my educated guess is these girls are from a modelling agency or from a pool that the photographers used at the time. probably local. in stuttgart. i'd bet most of the locations used for the factory publicity shots through the years are all local to the stuttgart area - similar distance as the airfields used in the shots being discussed. within an hour or so of stuttgart and suitable for travel to and completion of a one day shoot. |

who is the girl? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I have an email out to the current owners of the company that is in the location of the air port. Fingers crossed they know someone who was there 50 years ago when those pictures were taken. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) |

@SirAndy
this topic that @Osnabruck914 started is a real german tech rabbithole. you just sent me down one of them with nailing the air field. the nabern teck fluggplatz turns out to be also the home of wolf hirth gmbh. you probably knew that? i had heard of wolf hirth. a very important figure in aviation. he was a friend of heini dittmar. i became aware of h d 25 years ago when i went to see the ME 109, 262 and 163 that are held in the australian war museum in canberra. the 109 is interesting as its the last unmeddled with 109 left in the world. never repainted. never touched. straight from its last battle. bullet holes and all. with one white winter camo wing fitted by the luftwaffe in the last desperate days of WW2. a striking artefact. we also have a 163. tiny. with the rocket engine and very dangerous. dittmar was the first man to exceed 1000 kmh in flight in one of those things. its still not clear whether or not he may have gone supersonic. the plane went into severe vibration and had damaged control surfaces after ihe landed it. if he didn't break the sound barrier he was knocking at the door. there is just so much technology and invention been done in germany. you can barely walk around the place without stepping over some piece of ground big things were thought up on. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) its appropriate the 914 was photographed a stones throw from hirth's little glider factory. i found this view of the end of the airfield on his old company website. its still around. be of interest to Osnabruk914. nothings really changed in the landscape since 1972. ![]() |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Like i said, i have an email out to the current owners of Wolf Hirth GmbH. They took over in the '90s and aren't related to Hirth itself as he died in the late '50s and his wife took over and sold the company to Messerschmitt in '76 and died herself in the '90s. So this might be a dead end. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) |
