My 73 has the original steering wheel. Looking at a few threads, I gather 360mm is stock. Thing is I am 6'2". Have no problem fitting in the 914 itself, but the steering wheel is awkward at best. Can another member who is similarly tall post a photo of another smaller wheel as they sit in the drivers seat? Thinking a 350mm may solve my problems? Though looking at other photos maybe obscure the gauges a little. Still better then having my knees on the sides of it!

I understand your problem, since I had the same issues with swinging my legs easily into the car. I eventually ended up buying an aftermarket quick release hub off of Ebay and use it with a smaller aftermarket "Jackie Stewart" wheel. I had first tried one of those offset hubs that are sold by one of the 914World vendors, but it still didn't give me enough room to easily slide my legs under the sports steering wheel. With the quick release hub, I just take off the steering wheel and slide into the car with ease.

I am a big 6'1 and I recently found out putting a cushion on the seat changes stuff quite a bit as far as legs and knees and the wheel. I got a thin breathable thing on Amazon at the suggestion of others on here. I was surprised at how much it changed the feel. Not sure if it will do what you need but I would try it real quick just to see. It seems counterintuitive but I think it changed the leg angle in the right way. I also reglued my stick more to the right. That was frustrating ramming it into my leg to shift into reverse and first.

I'm 6'2" and use a 350mm steering wheel. I do have several gauges rotated so the important stuff is in view.
And since i have two eyes, i took two images with a slight offset. Combine the two and you get pretty much exactly what i see when i drive. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif) ![]() ![]() |

If the wheel itself were thinner that would be less of a problem maybe. Slick though how you rotated them to compensate. |

6'1", I sit pretty much all the way back to get my leg length just right.
Then a 370mm Momo Prototipo (to not obscure the gauges), Momo extension to get the wheel closer, and the JWest eccentric to move it up. Works great for me. |

And a have a crush on that Momo. Have a photo of how this looks? |

I have a 350 Prototipo and the J West adapter. Bringing the wheel closer sounds helpfu tool. I see Pelican carries a .5" Momo spacer. How big of a spacer/extension did you go with (.5", 1", or something else)? |

Sitting upright with the phone right up against my eyes.
![]() Edit: and the usual question I get: what's with the LEDs? I added those some time ago when I installed the Speedhut tach. I didn't like where the wanring lights were anyway so I got LEDs and installed them in a more-visible location, wired to the same wires in the back. Left to right: - Yellow = GEN light - Red = oil pressure light like Porsche should have done to begin with! - Green = turn signal - Blue - high beams ![]() |

When my teenage son was driving our 914 with the top on it, he would just remove the bottom seat cushion and sit on the fiberglass seat frame. He was 6ft 6 inches and needed the extra headroom, as well as all extra the leg room, this gave him. However, not very viable for long drives.

I did the same thing when I autocrossed and time-trialed a 914 back in the 90s, to get more head room for helmet clearance. We had to keep the top on during competition. And when I built my 914 race car, I used a stock car style aluminum shell seat with minimal padding. I had that bolted to the floor and shoved back against the fire wall. BTW, I am 6'-2" with a 36" inseam. Going back on topic, in both those cars I installed a Momo steering wheel, 350 mm. |

@GregAmy what size space did you use (.5", 1", 2", etc.)?
Also, can you share a pic of the steering column from the side so I can see how you have it stacked? |

what size space did you use (.5", 1", 2", etc.)? 3-1/2" spacer, plus the 16mm JWest eccentric. Same in the race car, even though in that I sit in a Butler aluminum seat mounted directly to the floor. I like my wheels close (and large) for leverage, I do not like the straight-arms stance. I can maybe get a photo tomorrow. |

what size space did you use (.5", 1", 2", etc.)? Remember, our cars have a bit of a dish and offset stock, so these not only compensate for losing that with a flat wheel, but also for my personal driving preference. Street car. I sit with the seat only slightly forward from dead back to get the correct comfy knee extension. In looking at this photo, I'm not only using a 3" extension and JWest's 16mm thick eccentric, but also an LTB Autosport 1" extension: ![]() Race car. I sit bolted to the floor in a thin Butler aluminum seat. It, too, is almost all the way back to the firewall, and tilted more supine such that the headrest is detached to get my head below the roll hoop. 3" spacer, OPM 2" spacer, and JWest 16mm eccentric. But notice, since I'm sitting on the floor, I have the eccentric moving the wheel down: ![]() This photo below is what I used as a guide to decide how much in spacing I wanted in that car. This is how I prefer to drive. ![]() |

You know, looking at these pics makes me rethink extending the column. First thought was that it would exacerbate the problem. But it's more clear now that would get it past my knees. If that doesn't force too much of an elbow bend to be comfortable and result in me smashing into the door!
Thanks all! |
