I’m lucky to have an original dash that is not cracked… guess the car was mostly garaged in its life up to now. Just one tiny blemish at the ashtray due to a cigarette a long time ago.
I have seen a few replacement dash pad units now and while I guess they are better than a cracked original, there is always a problem with texture/color. As far as I know the originals were made by putting a preformed vinyl sheet (with the classic sort of leather texture) in a mold and then backfilling it with some kind of foam. These days many appear to be one-piece parts made from some sort of self-skinning rubber or PU material. The texture is applied to the mold surface, but they don’t get it right - there is often the common “pebble” texture like in the images above, which is easier/cheaper to apply to the mold maybe than leather. Plus the gloss isn’t right. I have seen one with a possible vinyl skin that had a leather texture that was closer to original (but not perfect), but in that case the color was not black enough. That could possibly be fixed with a coat of black vinyl dye. The difference in texture/color was apparent with an original ashtray inserted. |

That looks totally satisfactory for a driver level car with a cracked dash pad.

That looks totally satisfactory for a driver level car with a cracked dash pad. Yeah, that is not bad, and as I said, could possibly be improved with some black vinyl dye to make it darker. Perhaps a bit risky though. Given that this is on a Euro car, it's likely that it came from a European supplier. Like this one - who claims it's their own in-house production - https://en.hoffmann-speedster.com/dashboard...lhoC3ooQAvD_BwE Not my car though, so I don't have its history. |
