carb popping is not uncommon with these, I have seen it and taken the time working out the basics to get things right. Can be frustrating |

I’d bet money the bouncing of the throttle shafts and the rattle is because you had a very rough idle in that video.
Focus on resolving cylinder 2&3 issue. Rebalance & synch. I’ll be surprised if your shaft rattle isn’t greatly diminished or gone. |

Tail of 2 sets of carbs
I purchased a car with some performance carbs, I had a distro problem or a carb problem, changed carbs and then found the problem with the distro (springs were wrong - very wrong) SOoooooo, now I have a set of original though rebuilt carbs that I cannot balance. There seems to be too much air coming in through the shafts. If you remember, I noticed that the shafts were rattling. too much play. I tried new Teflon shims for the carbs - not enough - the shafts are though within spec, they are really beat up, (pitted, etc) and still rattling....a lot. and the inner bushings are near impossible to measure.........so........here is the plan The performance carbs have new shafts but 32mm throats and larger jets. I plan on the following Remove the 27mm chokes and jets from the new carbs with the worn shafts to the old carbs with great shafts and less hours on them, I tried to buy shafts and the less expensive ones are n/a and the ones available are silly money......i may buy them anyway.....reset the carbs, have 2 nice sets with one that is original equipment....... Pictures later this week. |

***UPDATE***
I removed the Starboard carb and swapped the chokes and jets with a newer body that has new shafts. very tight Replaced on the car (I can remove and replace in an hr now - used to take 3 days) and started it. Very promising, idle was MUCH smoother, will report back tomorrow - neighbors are a bot fussy about 914s and this magic hour of 10pm........ have to do the Port carb too! |

neighbors are a bot fussy about 914s and this magic hour of 10pm........ Two of the best movie scenes ever from World’s Fastest Indian: Burt starting the Scout at the crack of dawn and revin’ the hell out of it waking up the neighbors. Burt setting the yard on fire so it won’t get overgrown while he’s away at Bonneville. Be dedicated like Burt (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif) Good progress! OK, making progress,
I put the carbs on the car that are newer and do not leak at the shafts. Near all of the popping and snorting has gone away, the bucking is still there. Low end idle is much better (smoother) I will go through the least lean (is that the description?) later today and report back. My sense is that the bucking must be ignition or something more sinister. Not sure if carb tuning will correct bucking during cruse. TO BE CLEAR there is no bucking while accelerating. More data to come, Happy 917 Day. |

How is the side to side air meter numbers now? With the snail?
This can be a major cause of bucking |
