another trustworthy 914/6 example.
GT recently for auction on BAT.
completely unmolested and in highly original condition.
original paint - only mechanically maintained and recommissioned.

has the vent covers.

which kind of surprised me because i would have thought porsche would have removed them looking for every gram they could lightening the car.

but.

its very hard to locate reasonably trustworthy 6s that are well documented in order to verify what is suggested in the parts catalogue. nearly all have been restored and repainted. likely losing the vent covers for full bare metal restorations and repaints?
but it would seem that the 6s got the vent screens in the door recess - and its highly probable that only the early 4s did not have them.

and as to what happens to later 4s in terms of market country differences you would need to locate enough trustworthy original examples of ROW cars to know for sure.
but there appears to be a suggestion that some specs and markets maybe did not get them - though in the case of the USA market i feel its pretty definite that all the USA cars got them post 72.

an interesting one i came across.
completely rusted out 6 that was for sale at the "salubrious" dealers in LA.
vent covers are there.
think this one is very trustworthy as its obvious no one has really touched this car except to apply some lipstick in the odd place to make it appear somehow more complete than it was. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

a vent cover can also be detected peeking out on this 916.
which were based on 71 914/6s i believe.

but having said that, the yellow 916 auctioned a year or two back did not have the vent covers. however it had been restored. so could easily have lost them.

i think given these covers were to some extent rust traps with the foam filter in behind them any car that has been restored has likely had them removed for fairly sensible reasons. and most 914/6s have been restored at this point making it hard to find an unmolested example that has been documented.

my opinion is that the 6s originally all had these vent covers.
during the same period from 70 to start of 72 the 4s did not have them.

as noted above.
whatever goes on with later years of ROW 4s is very hard to determine.
one reliable example seems to suggest not all those 4s got them originally.

very safe to assume that all USA bound cars from 72 on got these vent covers.
