Thanks to a world member pointing this out on facebook marketplace. It was spelled wrong and slid under my search. Scheel 303 seat. Built and upholstered almost exactly like a 914 seat. Used on some 914-6GT’s. Hopefully this is a quick project - famous last words. If I can get a local upholstery shop to make new vinyl upholstery, I can reassemble and take care of the rest. Finding the really thin corduroy might be a challenge but I’m sure it’s out there and I don’t need much.

The corduroy that matches IS hard to find and is expensive. Scheel actually will sell you it today, at $162/yard.

mepstein

i went thru this same thing recently.

that's the good news

here's what the repair shop said, at the start of the the process

Good Morning xxx

The seat is made up of the corduroy center and the outer is Vinyl. When we looked at the seat originally, we thought we would have to replace the vinyl and the corduroy. When we disassembled the seat we see the corduroy was pulled lose -we can save that .

We need to replace the outer black vinyl My sewing guy is getting me a price I will let you know .

Then

when they took the seat apart, they found this. a really cheap seat construct

If you email the photos to yourself, you can usually resize them.
I am interested to hear your story.
These are very basic seats. Open cell foam. Vinyl is held down by metal tabs along the edges. Just like 914 seats. There’s not much to them. Weight is only 16lbs without rails.

I bought one recently. The seller said it was unused in his BMW project car. I think it’s actually NOS. I’ll probably spend a similar amount to restore this one as I paid for the new one. They don’t come around often and I made a mistake selling one a couple years ago.

This is my second post, which shows to basic progress of my seat project.
The restorer was able to save the original corduroy center, put in new foam and vinyl.

First picture: seat before work

Second picture: seat with frame damage

Third image: seat with frame damage, another view

Fourth Image: seat stripped, front view

Fifth Image: seat completed. new vinyl, original corduroy center

Please let me know if you have any questions

Now I get what you are referring to. You have a later seat with a metal frame. Earlier versions were the fiberglass shell like mine. It's really common to have a cracked or broken metal frame, especially on the outside side of the seat. That's were the seat gets pushed on when entering or exiting the car. Even 914 seats often have cracks on the outside edge. At least it's easy to fix and even reinforce.

The restored seat looks great.

Thanks!

fortunately I didn't have to touch the passenger seat, it was still like new!

the man who restored it really did a good job of reinforcing the metal frame when he welded it back together, so it should hold up.

BTW

if you're having trouble sourcing the corduroy material, the man that did mine may have a reference inside Scheel

I was directed to the Scheel website where they sell it. Not cheap but at least I don’t have to mess with overseas purchasing and tariffs. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Mark this thread is so good to see.

My seats were in good overall condition but had two issues.
First was that a slot was put in the seat bottom for a submarine belt.
Second was that the corduroy inserts were baggy.
My results are by no means perfect but do show what can be done with existing
Scheel Mann corduroy
It's also good to learn that the material is available should anyone need to do
a complete reupholstery

Maybe 1% less than perfect. I was a passenger in your car when your son was driving at the north east gathering. I've always liked fixed bucket seats. I find 914 seats to be comfortable. These Scheels' just take it up a notch.

I am also working on a Scheel 300 project. Mine is the same as Mark’s, a fiberglass shell version

I will be modding it slightly to optimize the fit for the 914. I am fitting a 914 headrest using the stock Scheel sliding tube arrangement. I am changing the angle of the molded in seat mount rails to get it a bit more upright so that it will fit deeper into the back pad recess along with trimming the bottom of the Sheel headrest mount tubes. I am confident that with these minor mods that I can actually get the seat further back and lower than stock, picking up a bit of leg and headroom.

I intended to use the “stock” Scheel corduroy but I found some reasonably priced black basket weave in real leather that i think will work, sort of a poor man’s Singer look.

I have 2 or 3 yards of the Scheel corduroy from Replicate if anyone needs some at a good price.

I also have a really nice set of replica Scheel GT sliders but I think I am going to adapt some stock sliders because I think I can get the seat lower using them. So the GT sliders will be available also.

Oh yea, I also have available a really nice Sheel headrest with a cord center section that needs to go.

Hoping to get back into this project before Christmas. Post some progress pic then.

Rory, that corduroy looks the absolute best I have seen. It normally looks baggy and pretty crappy but that is really nice and tight!! Who did that for you??
