I am restoring the 1973 914 my dad had when I was growing up. It has a 1.7L motor. I know I will need 2.0 liter heads. What do you recommend. There is a great price variance. I assume I will also need 2.0 headers among other things.

Are you sticking with fuel injection?

I built a 2056 from a 1.7 using almost all AA Performance parts. I went with 42x36 heads round port.

Part of the selection process is understanding how you plan to use the car. With stock fuel injection the limiting factor is intake runners and throttle body. My experience with building engines in the past… it can be a mistake to over size the heads when you have the other limitations.

My car is fine… it has good power the comes on predictably. It’s no hot rod… but it meets
My goals and is a good reliable driving toy.

One note… if you are using DJet make sure the know to drill and tap for the temp sensor. Also you’ll need to decide on head vents. I went without and it breaths fine. I have about 5k on the engine and it works well for me.

1.8 heads will drop right and have bigger valves. These heads can be worked to do what ever you need. OLD 2.0 Porsche heads are prone to temps and cracks. But can be found from northern cars in good shape. A few opted are for new casting and they to are available . Empi heads are the latest new casting and getting lots of interest and feedback, if you do not have a shop to build ones for you.. I hope this gets you started....

I am probably going to go with dual carburetors. I plan to drive the car as a weekend car. I am not racing it. So the ones you got were around $1350? I see some for that price and some that are a lot more in price so it is confusing. I do not want to under buy but also not over buy. This car was my dad's car. I want a fun peppy car and thought the 2056cc would be a good route. Jake Raby has a formula for building a 2056cc and it includes 96mm pistons and a different cam. I just power coated the rear suspension and replace all the bearings and shocks. I also did a 5 lug conversion for Fuchs which i have already purchased. I am on the front suspension now. So i have some time to research all of this. I really appreciate your time and suggestions.

I run DJet so I was constrained by that. I basically followed Jake’s advice. The one thing I wanted was a nice car that had decent torque that I didn’t have to spin up to 4500 to get in the power band.

If you have the fuel injection system it’s worth saving IMO. It works really really for a street car. Carbs just are a different set of challenges.

Stock fuel injection is long gone.

If you were to use 2.0 heads, then you would also need the 2.0 tin over the engine since the spark plugs are located differently; 2.0 tin is hard to find now. It also may be easier to find intake manifolds for the 4 stud 1.7/1.8 heads; 2.0 heads have significantly different manifold mounting. The 914 2.0 heads are uniquely Porsche; bus parts are not the same.

Purchased these heads for my recent 2056 build and have about 1500 miles on them.
