When I pulled the engine apart after buying the car, it had the original bearings still in the case. Well that’s what assumed, because the bearings had the VW stamp and the little elephant on them. I didn’t add those drain back holes in the case, this is how I bought it. So if they aren’t factory, then someone previous to me put them in there. Not sure after going to all that trouble, they would reuse the bearings..lol. When I had the oil pressure problem and pulled my new engine back apart, it only had about 3 hours of runtime. But that area around the main seal was dry as a bone, so they must work well. |

The Raby Mod is to cut small triangular grooves (with a simple triangle file) into one case side, top and bottom from the seal recess into the internal crank case.
This is gravy to do... Those holes you have seem large and possibly machined... Do you have a picture of the inside of the case on that side where I can see what was done? Those are BIG enough that it would bother me. Thankfully the last bearing is one piece and not as reliant on bearing crush for retention. |
