ASE Master machinist is one of my credentials.

Doesn't really mean that much to me...

I've got a 75 1.8L car too.

No way would I even spend the time cleaning that up!

Fixing just those welded in plugs will be $500+

Then it needs the rest of it done...

You put a want to buy add up for a nice case stating you would pay 500 and one of the forum members will produce something nice.

I bought a complete 2.0L core (whole puppy) from 914sixer for $500 that is NICE!
Last year I had a locked 2.0L core delivered to the shop for 200.
It has 44 Webbers on it (also locked!) I haven't even torn it down.
At some point I'll sell them on the forum (plans always change!) and I'm close to you.

Yours is a paperweight. Keep it if you must (only # matching MIGHT be worth saving) and move on...

What's the rest of it look like?
Post some pictures.

Got it! I thought that meant permanent.

In regards to the degreaser for cleaning the engine, a diluted degreaser of the simple green pro would not be good? still might darken the case? if so I will just buy a big bottle of dawn dish soap, fill a large tub with hot water and get to scrubbing.

Just some thoughts.

These motors are 50+ years old!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

They ALL have problems, some small, some large.

If it were my case, I'd inpect it carefully and figure out what else needs to be fixed. For example, what machining needs done? (Deck? Align bore? Open up for larger cylinders? etc.)

We have a case that is being prepared for a large type iv motor. It has machine work needs, including a mangled drain plug. Not a particularly difficult fix. Tap larger hole and install something like this:

I guess the point is to figure out what you can do and what doesn't make sense. It looks fairly good from the distance (behind the keyboard).

Again, if it were my case, I might be willing to pull out an annular cutter and go to town on the drill press (don't have a mIll) with a diameter much larger than the plug. Maybe you can see the outline of the plug and switch to a smaller cutter. See what happens. But, yes, I wouldn't invest $500 in machine work just for the welded plugs removal (although some might be willing to clean the case and galleys and run it. Your call). At that point, I'd be looking for a different case.

Oh, one other thought.

The type 1 VW guys are paying $1,200 to $1,400 (plus tax and shipping) for a new case for their bugs.

There are no new type iv cases. So, consider what getting a type iv case machined is worth to you.

Dawn Platinum Power Wash Spray works really well to cut grease. Spray it on wait 15 minutes or so and rinse it really well. Don't let the power wash dry up though.
