Here's one version of a modified windage tray, although a little hard to see.

Don't know what version we'll put in the project motor yet. Can't find another photo of one that's much more modified (think it was from a Raby motor), but maybe searching around, you can track it down. Probably the best choice is to make/increase drain back holes, slots and probably be sure to put them right below the pushrod tube ends.

Is this cut on the other side also? Thanks

I am thinking I should run the "deep sump" and lower the oil level to compensate and raise the engine 1/2" or so for some slight added clearance and also add a strong metal bracket to the steel beam to protect the sump from 2x4's or rocks that I might run over.

Those with experience please let me know if this seems foolish.

Yes it’s foolish. You’re building a canyon carver but then want to raise Cg of the heaviest component (driveline) in the car?

either that or avoid sweepers. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

why i got skinny tyres on my stoopid 1.8. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif)

Yup, lol.

We started having problems in the racer in the early 00s when Hoosier got really good with their DOT tires (whatever the R7s were called back then R3S03?). Rules didn't allow dry sump and you needed the Purple Crack to be competitive so the car got parked until it was turned into a vintage racer in the teens (and it got a dry sump).

I've done a couple track days in my street car, 195/50-15 street Firestones, and didn't notice any issues.

Honestly, dry-sumping a Type 4 is pretty damned easy and not that expensive. The pump is only $105, and you can get a Canton oil tank for a decent price (or give a nod to the /6 and put a repro tank in the stock location). From there it's just oil lines and fittings...

Thanks for sharing Bob!

That looks like how I remember the tray (or very similar), but just couldn't find the photo.
