Or even currently broken with a cracked cage we can’t see yet.
Based on OP’s comment: “As a side note, the rear wheels were very difficult to turn by hand with gearbox in N. Now with the inboard CVs disconnected they turn very easily.” Always hard to tell what comments mean when you can’t feel for yourself. He could be referring to the drag and inertia of turning the differential (normal) or something extremely bound up from broken or mismatched and/or wrong parts. |
