Excellent. Without the GEN bulb most likely the alternator will not start. Does the GEN light go out when the engine starts? If so, this means the alternator is working to some degree.

By shorting DF to D+ the alternator is outputting maximum power. This is a good test for the alternator. Make a short pigtail with 2 quick disconnect female spades to do the jumping.

FWIW, I've found that voltage drops and alternator loading, especially at idle, can be a problem in the 914. Things I've done to improve the situation:

1. Replace all lights (except for the gauge lights) with LED's.
2. Add an additional heavy (8 ga) wire from the alternator body to chassis ground.
3. Check the condition of your battery ground strap. The OEM braided one fell apart when I removed it!
4. Clean all ground points and use dielectric grease when re-installing.

Use a DMM and check for ground voltage drops throughout the wiring system.

Was just getting ready to do the "test" today jumping the wires (after my son helped his colourblind father confirm the wires) and wanted to confirm:

I have removed the voltage regulator and then jump the two wires with the regulator removed? Don't want to fry something!!

TIA.


(can you tell I very much dislike electrical stuff? Would much rather rebuild an engine!!)

Yes. Jump DF to D+ and basically put the alternator into maximum output. Won't hurt anything.

Measure the battery voltage and D+/DF voltage to chassis. Both should track each other and be around 17V.
