I read that it took a factory engine builder 40 hours to assemble a four cam, and of course that was with all new parts. I can’t guess how many hours it takes to tear one down, inspect everything, and then put it back together after all the machine work has been done.

Apparently the biggest problem with those engines in street cars were people who didn’t keep them spoiled up. Lugging the car around town at 1400 rpm is really bad, whereas it’ll run all day without a problem if you keep it wound up.

It’s supposed to take about 40 hours to assemble a 911 engine. That is when everything is at your fingertips, measured up correctly and ready to go. IRL, it’s always longer. 50 year old engines that are an mis-match of original parts, original replacement parts, aftermarket parts and modified parts. 100 hours is a more reasonable expectation. We had new Mahle turbo cylinders come through out of spec. They denied a problem but now come with a disclaimer. We fixed the issue with a visit to our machine shop. Apparently an entire run is mis sized since the replacements were the same spec. If Mahle is making mistakes you can imagine what the aftermarket components look like.

It is happening here, a 4-cam in a 914.

different 4 cam in the article that harald posted.
its a 4 cam 6.
something i had never heard of. but porsche built approx 10 of them back in the 60s.
chain driven cams. for the race cars. but they went to the 8 instead before the engine got much developed further.
the engine has been reproduced or recreated more recently in germany.
if you read the article, its very interesting.
the website he has linked to also details the history of the car the engine is in.
its been fitted to a 911r tribute.
slots straight into a 911 engine bay with only the tiniest of modifications.
perfect for a 914.(IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Just a note of thanks to all the folks who posted OLD COOL stuff!

Ninja approved! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ninja.gif)

Great reading material!

The DOHC 6 article made it sound like some of those engines got out, used in vastly different cars, and MIGHT be sitting in a shop gathering dust somewhere...

That would be a FIND!

@wonkipop He's got you WHIPPED!

His is not a 6 but...

He can touch it, experience a car/engine almost none of us will ever have a chance too.

I'd always thought I saw an article, years ago, about air-cooled 6 DOHC Porsche motors but couldn't remember where and I searched for exactly that a couple of months back.

Couldn't find crap, although I didn't search hard.

This forum provided the answer without asking!

Woki, I want to visit Australia someday, bucket list type of thing.

I want to visit Unobtanium more...

i have seen and heard a 4 cam 4 in the flesh.
there are a couple of them down here.
lot of good stuff came here back in the 50s and 60s.
it makes a devilish sound.

would be curious to hear and see a 4 cam six as shown in article harald linked.
pretty sure nothing like that here.

EDIT
got so curious about 916 4 cam 6 @Ninja i searched some more.
found these two videos.

road test! driver stretches it out to 9K revs!

on the RUF dyno.
