as an aside and out of interest @chmillman , so your car is a 74 and euro delivered. in the front trunk is there that curved piece of reinforcing panel behind the front panel int the spare wheel well like USA cars had? Nope, Euro (or ROW?) cars didn’t get the reinforcement. No bumper horns either. thanks mate. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) i had a feeling they did not have it. my old mate who died 15 years back had a 73 euro 2.0 that came here via crayfords conversions to rhd back in 1974 and i had a feeling it did not have the reinforcement either. nor the collision bars in the doors. with its euro spec 2.0 it was a lively car in my memory. i drove it a couple of times. light and with a surprisingly urgent engine. also......i think you have proper euro indicator buckets, just someones had to go in there and sort out the bulb socket sometime in its long long long long life. i don't think its a USA owner type hack job. its just someone having to fix a problem with the bulb socket somewhere back in time. when you think about it - its amazing 914s are still out there getting driven around. seriously driven around. half a century old. to put it in context its like driving a model T ford when the 914 was fresh in the showrooms. Yep, pretty amazing at that...
It looks like I might just be stuck trying to fix the existing socket somehow - all of the accessory BA15s sockets I have found have a depth of about 25mm which would hit the bottom of the bucket. They are that depth because they have a spring in them which pushes the center contact. I ordered a couple for testing anyway, but I'm not optimistic. I would really like to know how the original sockets worked with so little depth, the one that's in there is only about 15mm deep. Seems like the center contact simply relied on it being a spring-y material, there's no real room for an actual spring. I don't really want to order the chrome-plated plastic replacement buckets I found here, but if I have to, I will. |

I have not seen "the chrome-plated plastic replacement buckets", can you post a link to where they are available from?
