Thanks @Ninja . I should have mentioned that this is a 2.0 with 94mm euro P&C (so nothing exotic), and the cylinders do not have the upper sealing ring at the head. I'll look into lapping the cylinders into the heads and re-sealing at the case. I'm trying to avoid going fully down the slippery slope here. Yep thats all you need no point going further ,its a relatively simple job without adding more complications ,you mentioned it ran well before and will again ,done the same job many years ago and that motor went very well after that repair . I will say you have the right attitude regarding care and service of these.
I have a 2400 sq ft Automotive shop with hydraulic lift table and pretty much any tools I need and I LOATHE re-dos. In my book, having to pull something BACK OUT before an acceptable service interval (say 50K miles) means I FUCHED UP! Come back, black flagged, re-do, customer pissed and maybe have to pay for rent car! It's one of the reasons I now specialize in Automotive AC repair. With OEM compressors I fail once out of 300 installs. So, I hunt perfection. It is un-obtainable, but I get closer than any other technician I know. If it didn't matter; if there wasn't a next job waiting, I'd be less anal... You'll be fine with your plans. Since the rings don't matter don't screw with them. I thought there might be a more appropriate case sealant. I've seen lots of guys reference Curil so that's the ticket. You only have a single head off, correct? I would NOT pull the installed head and run that side as is as you'll be ripping this back apart soon. No need to check cam stuff as you may replace later. I would pull the pistons and cylinders on the open side just to re-seal the jugs as the RTV doesn't work worth a shit once it's "cracked". For those of you who care, my previous posts are how to check this type of "can I re-use these parts and expect reasonable usage" is directly applicable. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ninja.gif) |

My shop is only about half the size of yours, but since I only work on my cars and my kids' cars - I have friendly customers (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif). I'm normally a perfectionist as well (I spent 8 years restoring my first 911), and it is crucial for the type of engineering work that I do - but given the circumstances surrounding this particular job I'm willing to compromise a bit, as long as it does not compromise safety or make the engine go boom. Yes, just bank 2 head is removed, and as you suggested, I have no plans to remove the bank1 head at this time - that will come later this year. But based on what I found tonight (see below), this decision will gnaw away at me until I remove it. So, I started pulling #4 cylinder to get a look at the wrist pin, and OMG the RTV is everywhere! (see photo) I will obviously try to avoid any falling in the case when cleaning this mess, but I will be checking the sump screen after I run the engine for a short time to see if any fell in. Regarding the wrist pins - I see snap-rings on the ends, so yes they are floating. |
