My son used to be an analyst at a private equity firm. Now he is getting paid to teach AI to do what he used to do.

Teaching the machine that will replace you?

Most of what we do on the internet is determined by an algorithm. Search, like google, is one huge algorithm.

True. But people react different ways to search results. Some assume anything at the top is accurate and complete, especially if some preferred social media or partisan source. I view search results with skepticism, especially sources.

The point I was trying to make is that it is becoming harder to find real sources of information that have not been "processed" by AI or some other algorithm that is designed to garner the most clicks. The sheer volume of the slop generated automatically by bots is increasingly crowding out the real sources of info.

not if you are trained in research --

and anyway, there is AI and there is AI.
and there is always and has always been populism....... which has nothing to do with knowledge.

its entirely possible that knowledge will go underground again.
or overground. like it always once was. or maybe has in fact always been, despite the illusion of the internet - something you are trained in and which cannot be necessarily accessed at the tap of a phone? --- unless you first are sceptical and work out which of whatever is on offer is correct.

the internet has been perhaps for a while like the great library of alexandria in the ancient world.
but it caught fire and burned down. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Once the internet was monetized it was doomed.

Those of us who used the internet in the 1990’s remember the almost unlimited access to information that was not hidden behind paywalls or covered with layers of ads. The “good old days”.

I would posit most AI models are tweaked for political correctness and profit generation for the developers….not for your benefit

Most of us know some guy who talks just to hear themselves talk. Sometimes they tell the truth and sometimes they just say things to talk without any regard to the truthfulness of what they are saying. They are not malicious liars. They just want to say something, anything just to talk. They are "bull shitters."
That is the reality of AI according to a couple researchers. Their paper on the subject is an illuminating read.
