Installed a RennShift on my Tail Shifter, Game Changer in driving my '72 Tail Shifter Options

I agonized for several years about taking the plunge and getting a RennShifter for my '72 914/4 tailshift setup.. Eric's PMB videos convinced me to go for it. I had gotten used to the old shifter... and just had to be careful and deliberate when I drove it. I had originally planned to switch to a sideshift... but opted to keep it more original. I figured the old way worked and that was ok for me. I've also driven some side shifters... and they're better but nothing like this.

Boy... this Rennshift is some of the best money I've ever spent. I'm wondering now what was so wrong with my stock setup. I had already done all the bushings and so they were all fresh. I just unbolted my stock shifter and slid in the new one. Only adjustment was the angle of the shifter. I got the longer shifter and used a screw on ball for the top. I was honestly shocked how well this thing works. I kept the throw at 20% as it came. It's like butter... First and reverse are almost mindless.

I was worried about the noise (clicks etc) I've heard in some of the youtube videos. I can't sense any of that while driving.

Some days it all comes together just right!

I went side shifter on my 1971 and enjoy the more precise shifting. But I did like the sloppiness of the stock shifter, reminded my of the 1971 I had in college in the 1970's.
One of the problems involved letting anyone else enjoy the car, it's such a learned skill that was second nature to me but no one else could really master it.

It's funny - i just put a Weltmeister short shifter in my 74 2.0 as well as a Tangerine firewall bushing. It's like night and day - but there is a (small) part of me that misses the ol' days of shifting the "bag of antlers" that i grew up with...I guess it was part of the charm!
