All: Finishing up the LE engine bay and I’d like to refinish the intakes in a color close to original. I don’t have spraying equipment so it needs to be rattle can. I checked the local Auto parts stores VHT selections and nothing comes close Jeff B had a rec back in 2006 but I’m not sure that company sells in small cans.
Suggestions?

This is what I have found to be a great match.

Thanks Garland: Those do look nice! I thought I had a solution, found a paint store that will custom mix automotive paint in a rattle can. Only to find out that they need a large flat space to scan for the correct color. So, went to Sherwin and found swatches that seemed really close that they could scan. Only then I didn't know whether to use the faded runner color or the color that was under the connecting hoses. I'm liking the Ford gray. Need to keep moving.

Wow! Those look fantastic. I had mine powder coated and the color was much lighter than I had anticipated. The Ford Grey looks spot on.

depends how fussy you want to be.

ford grey looks ok but its quite a bit off original.

original is VW L249. basically a dove grey with bluish tinge and a fair bit lighter than ford grey.

see here. this is very close if not 100% correct.

The HEs, most of the heat ducting and intake manifolds (all the same coating) are high heat conditions, the coating must resist high temps and its a matte gloss finish:

def matt finish on intake runners originally.

i'd have to do more research to be 100% sure but i would not mind betting the orig factory paint finish on exhaust, mufflers, heat exchangers etc was the same L249 color as the intake runners as well. maybe a different composition paint ??? but was same color i feel.

this could be paint formula for the dove grey.
not sure whether gloss or not.
VW painted a lot of the utilitarian parts on beetles etc with the color.
commercial grade kombi vans had non chromed hubcabs in this color for instance.

for the fanatics out there. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) and i guess if you ( @robkammer ) are restoring an LE you probably are after the real deal color for accurate restoration purposes?

couple of 74 1.8 examples. you can see the bluish tone of the orig dove grey.

my car. orig.
