Is there meant to be any tape or adhesive on the inside of the rear window?
When I removed the seat backs from the car, I noticed a thin line of black caulk like adhesive. It's on the inside and I can't tell what purpose it would serve. I scraped it off with a razor blade. I need to know if I need to replace it with something before reinstalling the seats. @Eric_Shea has a great install post, but I don't see any mention of butyl tape on the interior side of the glass. Thanks.  |

What Ive seen on the lower edge of the glass is a tape line. Also what is most often missing are small swatchs of vinyl to trim out the cavity where the belt goes behind the backpad.

I believe the factory installed a strip of black tape across the rear window so the paint color wouldn't show through. I installed a strip of electrical tape on my red '74 after the glass install to mimic this.

Also what is most often missing are small swatchs of vinyl to trim out the cavity where the belt goes behind the backpad. i've got a clear memory of re-installing the rear glass in my 914 some 25+ years ago after it came loose and rattled. the factory used black tape across the lower edge of the window on the interior. this covered visible mastic on the other side of the glass. for cosmetic purposes. the small pieces of vinyl you mention at either end had the upper edges covered by the tape. i used electrical tape for the reinstallation. i replaced the electrical tape strip about 5 years ago when i was recommissioning. what @DennisV can see on his glass is the trace left of the original factory tape. i dont know what tape the factory originally used but it was black. even on a brown interior like my car the tape was black. |
