I got into my car a couple days ago, turned the key, and the compartment started to smoke. Looked to my right and a couple of wires were melting behind the passenger seat. They had shorted and I grabbed and pulled to stop any potential fire (after shutting off the ignition).
Fast forward a couple days when I'm diagnosing things. I pull the passenger side seat out. Found the wires. Started tracing them, looking to see if there was something in the engine compartment, etc., found the probable cause for my woes - the coil was just laying flat on the engine shroud under the passenger side carb. One of the mounting screws had worked itself out and the whole thing was just sitting on the engine, so I'm sure it shorted whatever these wires are. I'll dig into diagrams soon, but hopefully someone can save me a little time if they recognize them. If those two big fat yella wires are not connected together yet, it’s advisable to do that to avoid lotsa heartburn.
